3 Beauty Trends Black Women Dominated At MFW SS27

First was New York. Then, London. Now, fashion month’s spring/summer 2027 season has come to—and inevitably left—Milan. However, before the week ended, the third stop in the twice yearly fashion cycle offered a new perspective on beauty in, arguably, one of its best seasons.

At Gucci and Armani, eyes were overly smoky and dark, but not without a touch of gold to add dimension. Skin was wet at Bottega Veneta and at times, even a bit sweaty (see: Diesel.) And, hair wasn’t as overdone as one may expect. Instead, hairdressers at shows, like Marni and Prada, styled strands to be intentionally misplaced and frizzy.

Ahead, the ESSENCE beauty team reports on all the trends from MFW SS27.

Overdone Eyes

Makeup artist Sam Visser described the makeup at Gucci as “super sexy pop makeup,” which encircled the eyes in deep, smoky tones, like green, black, and red. At Giorgio Armani, “the eyes are elongated with a soft, diffused black shape, touched with gold at the centre of the lid,” wrote makeup artist Hiromi Ueda using Armani Beauty’s Eye Tint Liquid Eyeshadow in the ebony shade, 99M. A similar depth from Gucci and Armani was seen at Fendi, where makeup artist Pat McGrath brushed the eyes in clay-like shadow.

Wet Skin

Milan is known for fresh skin. And, this season was no exception. At Diesel, wet skin was almost sweaty and the obvious complement to kissable red lips, keyed by makeup artist Inge Grognard. Then, Pat McGrath delivered a wearable glass finish at Bottega Veneta which extended to hydrated lips. Makeup artist Marie Duhart had a similar approach to McGrath, pairing wet hair with hydrated brows, lips, and skin as a reminder to slug this fall.

Embracing The Fringe

Milan delivered a necessary reminder: Not every hair should have a place. At Marni, in fact, hair was intentionally misplaced by hairdresser Tom Wright, who pulled the hair back with a slept-in bump. Over at Prada, stylist Guido Palau had an even messier approach, teasing (and almost matting) frizzy hair. However, on afros, the look appeared less disheveled and instead, simply rejected definition in favor of frizz. Meanwhile, at Moschino, Paolo Soffiatti turned misplaced hair more discreet through bedhead updos.
