“It’s happening,” said Raven-Symoné in a TikTok video with over 25,000 likes. Sitting in celebrity hairstylist Erinn Courtney’s chair, the once buzz-cut star—who’s dyed her hair from pink to multi-color polka dots—is trying something different. But, this time, that means something more permanent than usual. “I’m starting my loc journey. I’m very excited about it.”

Almost micro in size, the stylist used a pink dreadlock crochet hook to instant loc the length and interlock the root. [They’re] not quite micro and [have] a little curl at the end,” Symoné says, affectionately retaining her coil pattern. And, for the record, they aren’t sister locs. “No, no, just no.”

Not because she doesn’t like sisterlocs (which have an installation process that spans days, not to mention routine retightening), but because the time spent in the chair for even just instant locs was enough. “This is 5 years worth of time right here,” she laughs, saying she’s not trying to be back in the chair anytime soon.

Instant locs, also known as insta-locs, is a loc method using a crochet tool to instantly loc natural hair. It takes about 4 to 6 hours (which, for Symoné, felt like 5 years) and is quicker than starter locs, which can sometimes take over six months to lock. But, despite the time spent, her excitement was palpable.

Just two days in, she gave her first loc update and even contemplated if she’ll end up posting too much about it. “I was sitting on the couch and I was like ‘Do I want to be one of those loc girlies that show their locs every day as the process goes?’,” she questioned, showing off the lightening bolt jewels she fixed into her hair.

And, it goes without saying, seeing Raven-Symoné—who’s had a controversial perspective on not being labeled as “African-American”—in arel=”tag”>celebrity hair
