Luv or Pop is the newly-released dating app by husband-and-wife duo Arlette Amuli and Bolia Matundi, the creators of the viral “Pop the Balloon or Find Love” dating show on YouTube.

“Pop the Balloon or Find Love” quickly took over our feeds when the show debuted in 2023. It now has nearly 1.5 million subscribers to its YouTube channel. Amuli and Matundi have now expanded their dating show world into an app. Luv or Pop launched in February and focuses on Black relationships. Notably, it doesn’t promote an endless binge of swiping, as reported by AfroTech, and is instead about more intentional matching.

“The main keyword we want people to remember when they hop onto Luv or Pop is ‘intentional,’” Amuli told AfroTech. “If you’re choosing somebody and saying, ‘I really like our conversations, let’s lock in and see where this goes,’ that shows how serious you are.”

Mirroring the show, users on Luv or Pop collect balloons for people they’re interested in. When they’re not interested, they pop the balloon. The app also features a Match Lock option, which pauses conversations with other matches once two singles decide to focus on each other. This is meant to help users on the app achieve that intentional approach to their dating app experience.

“We want this to be for real people finding real people,” Matundi added.

The app is made for users of any background, but it’s made with special attention to celebrating Black relationships. “When people started saying ‘Black excellence’ and supporting us, we realized we were making a difference,” Matundi said. Amuli added that they are dedicated to showcasing Black people finding Black love. “Our success stories are proving that there is still hope for the Black community in finding Black love,” she added.

The husband-and-wife team started off their hit dating show as an experiment. Matundi wanted his wife to host as he filmed, creating an environment where they tried to “match people with real intentionality, people that really want to match for real,” he previously told AfroTech.

The show is not just addictive to watch but has become a platform inspiring viewers’ discourse on modern dating, whether on woes, joys, or something else.

The content architects mastered making viral moments, and in this next stage, tech entrepreneurship is on the table. After all, Amuli said, in five years, she wants “Luv or Pop to be the number one dating app people think of.”
