The second note sent to media outlets following Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance indicated that she had died, according to new reporting. The note, which investigators considered to be potentially credible, reportedly made no request for payment for the release of her body after the first note demanded payment for her return.

Three people familiar with the matter told NBC News about the previously undisclosed details in the second note. The note also did not include an apology, according to NBC News’ sources.

The disappearance of Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, since February has confounded investigators and the public. The 84-year-old woman was reported missing to authorities in Pima County, Arizona, after she did not attend a virtual Sunday church service viewing with friends.

The investigation surfaced several potential leads, none of which have led to any major developments. Fake ransom notes and tips have also muddied the investigation. On Feb. 10, authorities released home surveillance footage of an armed, masked person appearing to tamper with the camera at her front door, but nothing has come of that.

The FBI said in February that Nancy Guthrie had mobility issues and required daily medication for a heart condition.

Local TV station KOLD, which received two notes that investigators deemed potentially credible, said the first stated Guthrie was safe and demanded millions in bitcoin for her return.

Savannah Guthrie, who returned to her hosting duties in April, said on the “Today” show on Tuesday that although the details in the note are new to the public, “this is the life that my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives, that our extended families live, that our children live every day.”

She was visibly emotional as she spoke, urging anyone with information to come forward.

“We are in agony. And we cannot be at peace,” she said. “And so, please, if you’re watching, no matter how small, the reward is there. You can tell us. It can be anonymous. Please do the right thing for us, for our family, for our children. And we love our mom, and we’ll never stop looking for her, never.”

Savannah Guthrie and her family have made several public pleas for their mother’s return since her disappearance. NBC News reported that after the second note was sent to media outlets, the “Today” show co-host posted a video on Instagram of her and her siblings appearing to address their mother’s possible kidnapper, saying they “will pay” for her return.

“We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her,” she said. “This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
