Elon Musk promotes xenophobic film that glorifies vigilantism

Elon Musk is among the conservatives boosting “Citizen Vigilante,” a film that tells the story of a white killer who takes the law into his own hands to target migrants, who are portrayed as criminals, and members of law enforcement who get in his way.

The film, which features disgraced former Hollywood star Armie Hammer and was produced by German filmmaker Uwe Boll, marks the latest in a disturbing trend: the MAGA movement embracing violent vigilantes, both in the real world and in fantasyland. I’ve written about previous examples, and I’ve made a video of myself discussing the topic for MS NOW.

One of the most damning critiques of the film comes from someone who previously co-wrote a book defending Boll. In fact, the former Boll defender — writer Nathan Rabin — rebuked the film in his review, calling it an “odious fascist revenge fantasy” and the “most racist film since D.W. Griffith’s controversial 1915 melodrama The Birth of a Nation,” the notorious film that lionized lynchings of Black people by the Ku Klux Klan.

That comparison seems apt. “The Birth of a Nation” was screened at the White House by Woodrow Wilson’s racist regime. Musk has been boosting “Citizen Vigilante” incessantly via X — a social media platform he has routinely used to promote racist propaganda to the masses — and even posted the film for free.

Musk’s promotion of “Citizen Vigilante” follows his fueling of anti-immigrant riots in Northern Ireland. For a sense of how deranged his posts about the film have become, here’s just one — which seems like a clear endorsement of shooting people.

Notable here is that Musk is facing a torrent of backlash and negative press as he tries to groom the masses into becoming anti-immigrant zealots. He has been throwing public tantrums over people — such as Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and journalist Nicholas Kristof — spotlighting the fact that his gutting of the U.S. Agency for International Development has caused a raft of deaths worldwide and is projected to cause millions more. Musk has been similarly outraged by people spotlighting the fact that his companies have benefited from massive federal contracts en route to him becoming a trillionaire.

The world’s richest man appears to have homed in on a not-so-novel strategy when questions arise about his wealth and how he wields it: doubling down on xenophobic propaganda and hoping his followers fall for the distraction.
