Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.

* In Texas’ closely watched Senate race, the latest Texas Public Opinion Research poll found Democratic state Rep. James Talarico ahead of Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton, 45% to 40%. The same poll showed Talarico with a three-point advantage in May.

A Texas Tribune report on the survey noted that it found Talarico “leading among voters who do not have a college degree — a group that has consistently favored Republicans in Texas and across the country.”

* Speaking of competitive Senate races in red states, Barack Obama is not only supporting Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek’s candidacy in Iowa, but the former president also joined Turek for a game of basketball that made for a memorable new campaign video.

* With less than a week remaining before Michigan’s competitive Democratic Senate primary, the latest Glengariff Group survey found Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens narrowly leading former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in a hypothetical general election matchup.  The same poll, however, showed Rogers ahead of former state health official Abdul El-Sayed by 10 points.

* In South Dakota, incumbent Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden was forced into a runoff primary this week, but he easily defeated businessman Toby Doeden.

* In this week’s congressional special election in Georgia, no candidate won 50% in the race to succeed the late Rep. David Scott, but Marcye Scott, the late congressman’s daughter, and former Gwinnett County School Board Chairman Everton Blair advanced to a runoff. Both candidates are Democrats.

* Democrats have low expectations in Idaho’s Senate race, but the party would love to see Republican Sen. Jim Risch face a competitive re-election. With this in mind, David Roth, the Democratic Senate nominee, dropped out of the race this week to clear the way for independent Todd Achilles to have a one-on-one race against the incumbent senator.

* And while former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is generally seen as the favorite in North Carolina’s open Senate race, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley’s partisan allies haven’t given up on him: The Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with the Senate GOP leadership, is launching a $17 million summer ad campaign in support of Whatley.
