Police said they had arrested an armed man at Trump National Golf Course outside Los Angeles, adding that federal agents spotted him walking the grounds and taking photos two days before the president arrived for an event there Tuesday.

Sheriff’s deputies found a 16-round ammunition clip on Jeanine John Taele and a loaded pistol and another clip in his car, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday, ahead of Trump’s arrival for a Republican National Committee fundraiser.

Taele was “appearing to monitor security-planning activities,” according to the sheriff’s department’s statement, which did not mention any intent to harm the president.

Both clips contained hollow-point bullets that are banned in California, the sheriff’s office said.

Taele, 38, was charged with carrying a concealed firearm and possession of armor-piercing/prohibited ammunition. He pleaded not guilty at a court appearance Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office told The Washington Post. The sheriff’s department said he was still being jailed.

Investigators got a search warrant for Taele’s home in Downey, California, and found an AR-15 rifle, a pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines and ammunition and “multiple notebooks containing concerning statements,” the sheriff’s department said.

In February, a Florida judge sentenced Ryan Routh to life in prison for trying to assassinate Trump at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September 2024, weeks before he was elected to his second term.
