The new trailer has arrived for If I Go Will They Miss Me, giving audiences another look at Walter Thompson-Hernández’s feature ahead of its theatrical release next month.
Set in Watts, Los Angeles, the film follows 12-year-old Lil Ant, played by newcomer Bodhi Dell, whose view of his father is filtered through the imagination of childhood. J. Alphonse Nicholson stars as the boy’s father, while Danielle Brooks rounds out the leading cast. The story examines their relationship through Lil Ant’s eyes as his understanding of his family begins to evolve.
If I Go Will They Miss Me hits theaters following a successful festival run. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and recently won Best Feature Film at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. Thompson-Hernández, who wrote and directed the project, was also named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch.
The filmmaker expanded upon his 2022 short film of the same name, which won the Short Film Jury Award for U.S. Fiction at Sundance. His feature version also features music from Grammy and Academy Award winner Jon Batiste, who serves as an executive producer.
Brooks and Nicholson are executive producers as well, alongside MACRO’s Charles D. King and James Lopez, among others. Josh Peters, Saba Zerehi and Ben Stillman produced the 95-minute film, with Rich Spirit handling distribution.
Los Angeles audiences will get the first opportunity to see the film during a special theatrical engagement beginning September 11. If I Go Will They Miss Me will then expand to more than 30 markets nationwide on September 18.
