Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has submitted his resignation amid tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the ongoing U.S. war with Iran, two sources familiar with the matter told MS NOW on Monday.

“The secretary spoke to the president about the current state of the Army and submitted his resignation,” a U.S. official told MS NOW. Another source said the White House has not yet accepted Driscoll’s resignation.

The news comes as the U.S. war with Iran, which military leaders have reportedly cautioned is unsustainable, reaches its sixth month. Driscoll was among the people who brought up concerns with the administration “surrounding Army transformation and readiness and Hegseth’s blocking those efforts specifically by firing the Generals who were responsible,” the source said.

Other modernization efforts that Hegseth appeared to have blocked include learning from Ukrainian warfare and advancing drone capabilities.

In April, Hegseth fired Gen. Randy George, Driscoll’s ally, from his post as the Army’s chief of staff. Then in August, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who was appointed by Hegseth as George’s replacement, subsequently closed a specialized drone unit that Driscoll had steered, forcing the unit to return to a traditional infantry battalion.

Still, another source familiar with discussions told MS NOW earlier this month that Driscoll had planned to serve an average tenure length — almost two years — even before tensions with Hegseth mounted over the past year.

“Since the beginning, Driscoll has always communicated 23 months as the average tenure, which is why he had to create built-in, lasting change,” the source said, noting the backdrop of the upcoming midterm elections, historically a time of turnover in any administration.

Driscoll is also a close associate of Vice President JD Vance, a potential 2028 presidential contender.

In a statement Monday to MS NOW, a White House spokesperson said, “Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army by providing outstanding leadership during historic military operations, restoring an emphasis on readiness and lethality, assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and more.”

“The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War,” the spokesperson added.
