President Donald Trump’s lies about noncitizen voters fraudulently swaying elections have served as the basis for his administration’s and his allies’ illiberal efforts to interfere with the electoral process. And they were just debunked — yet again — by a state audit.
The latest audit came out of Georgia — arguably the key focus of Trump’s election lies — and disproves the president’s baseless allegations.
As Channel 2 Action News in Georgia reported Tuesday, the recent state audit found that Georgia’s voter rolls were 99.9% accurate — and that the problems the auditors did find mainly boiled down to human error.
According to the outlet:
Channel 2 Action News has obtained an audit of the state’s voter rolls and found that the state’s election system is generally effective in preventing non-citizens from registering to vote. The audit estimated that no more than 0.1% of voter registration records would have allowed someone to vote despite an unverified identity, invalid address, or citizenship-related issue. Channel 2 investigative reporter Justin Gray obtained the audit that also showed there is still some work to be done, finding there were significant instances where people who appeared to be non-citizens were placed into active voter status because of human error and control weaknesses.
Crucially, the outlet reported:
The auditors reviewed roughly 8 million voter registrations and concluded that problems they identified represented a very small fraction of the voter rolls. It did not find evidence of widespread fraud.
Former Republican Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer has become a vocal critic of MAGA world’s election fraud lies after being targeted by them himself. Richer, who contributes to the election-focused website Declare News, noted Wednesday that Georgia’s audit adds to nearly two dozen states that have conducted similar reviews over the past two years finding scant evidence to support Trump’s claims of widespread noncitizen voter fraud.
Richer has logged his findings at Declare News, which you can read here.
Georgia Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has embraced illiberal voter suppression tactics in the past — including voter roll purges — but he has also fought election denialism from MAGA world and resisted efforts to hand sensitive voter data over to the Trump administration as it continues to spread its anti-immigrant conspiracy theories.
In a statement Tuesday, Raffensperger touted the audit’s findings:
“Georgia runs the cleanest elections in the country because we’ve spent years doing the hard work to secure our systems, verify our voter rolls, and make sure only eligible American citizens can vote. Now the General Assembly confirms what Georgians already know: our safeguards work, our voter lists are best in class, and Georgia elections are free, fair, and fast.”
