MS NOW’s Ayman Mohyeldin said Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is overseeing a “brutal unleashing of American power with no accountability,” after a New York Times analysis concluded that a bomb that struck a wedding party in southern Iran earlier this week came from the U.S. military. 

According to Iran’s Red Crescent Society, a humanitarian aid group, dozens were injured in the blast and five people were killed, including a 6-year-old boy. On Thursday, when Vice President JD Vance was asked about the strike, he told reporters that “sometimes things happen” and that the U.S. military was investigating the incident.

Mohyeldin said Tuesday’s bombing is only the latest example of the U.S. reportedly hitting civilian infrastructure during the ongoing conflict. “We have now, in this Iran war, hit a school full of children; we have hit hospitals; we have hit bridges and weddings,” he said. 

He told Chris Hayes that the U.S. military’s apparent disregard for civilian life has showcased the defense secretary’s vision for America’s forces. “What it highlights is what Pete Hegseth wanted all along. His vision of war is brutality — it’s the unchecked, complete brutal unleashing of American power with no accountability.”

Mohyeldin pointed to Hegseth’s decision to slash the Pentagon’s Civilian Protection Program by more than 90%, which, according to reporting from ProPublica, he did despite unanimous warnings from top military commanders.

“He’s stripping away the parts of the Pentagon which actually care about how America conducts war,” the MS NOW host said. “For a long time, American soldiers and American generals and the civil civilian leadership of the military would make the argument that in order for us to be the most effective military, we needed to know what we were bombing and making sure that we’re not losing the hearts and minds of the people that we’re trying to so-called liberate from this Islamic regime that we’re fighting against.”

“What do you think happens in a village, in a community where 100 schoolchildren or [people] in a wedding get killed? What do you think radicalizes that community more: the Islamic Republic or this killing?” Mohyeldin asked.
