Hillary Clinton says she’s ‘increasingly confident’ Democrats will win back Congress

Hillary Clinton told MS NOW she believes Democrats will take back the House in November and said she’s “increasingly confident” that control of the Senate could also be within reach. Despite that confidence, the former secretary of state warned Americans to take the threat Donald Trump and Republicans pose to the country’s elections “seriously” and advised state officials to be ready to “counter whatever they decide to do.”

During a wide-ranging interview with “Morning Joe” on Thursday, Clinton said voters, including some of Trump’s own supporters, have soured on the president nearly two years into his second term.

“I think the American people, even people who wanted to give Trump a chance, even people who voted for Trump, they didn’t vote for what’s happening now,” she said.

“These are real events in people’s lives,” Clinton told MS NOW, citing Trump’s ongoing war with Iran and the affordability crisis affecting Americans’ day-to-day lives.

“You can put lipstick on a pig, and it’s still a pig. And I think a lot of voters are saying, ‘I don’t believe this anymore,’” she explained.

While the former presidential candidate acknowledged Trump will always have a core group of supporters who will “follow him literally anywhere,” she said that “the vast majority of Americans, particularly independent swing voters,” are “done” with the president and are looking toward Democrats to hold him accountable.

“They want to check the power that this person in our Oval Office is trying to wield to an extent never before seen in American history,” she said. “I think they want to have the country take a deep breath and put some big checks and balances on Trump for his last two years.”

“I am very confident we’re going to take back the House, and I’m increasingly confident we’re going to take the Senate,” she told MS NOW.

While Clinton has faith her party can win over voters in November, she stressed that election officials across the country must “take seriously the unfortunate attitude that Trump and his party have” and said Republicans don’t appear to be fighting “fair.”

“They’re going to try to prevent mail-in ballots from being sent to people, they’re going to try to intimidate people from going to the polls, they’re going to be threatening people, and unfortunately, they may well show up in certain places in order to demonstrate a kind of chilling effect on voters,” she warned.

Clinton said election officials, state attorneys general and advocates must be “as prepared as possible” to combat those efforts, telling MS NOW, “We’re trying to be as ready as we can … to counter whatever they decide to do.”
