President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has agreed to convert his planned triumphal arch into a “top grade military complex” to house snipers and drones.
The president said the Pentagon has requested that he shift from his originally planned 250-foot tall arch along the Arlington Memorial Bridge into a military facility. He did not provide details on the alleged request.
“At the strong request of the United States Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch, planned since the Civil War Era many years ago, at the Receptive Circle adjoining the Arlington Memorial Bridge, into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch, to house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers, on both the roof and plaza areas, and additionally have and hold large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “There will be no facility like this anywhere in the World.”
The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to MS NOW’s request for comment on whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth or other U.S. military officials asked the president to build a military complex along the Potomac River in the nation’s capital.
Trump appeared to be using national security as an argument for building a weaponized version of his arch, much as his administration did in defending the White House ballroom project to the Supreme Court.
Trump’s original arch, planned to be about 165 feet wide, has faced legal challenges since it was announced in October of 2025 at a dinner with White House ballroom construction donors.
A lawsuit filed last February by a group of Vietnam veterans seeking to block the project is still pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The veterans then filed a request for a restraining order early this month, one day after Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced excavation work would begin at the site between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
“Out of the 59 top cities and Capitals, Washington, D.C., IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD THAT DOES NOT HAVE A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but it will now and, by far, the greatest of them all!” Trump added in his social media post Sunday.
The Trump administration has not released renderings of the militarized version of the triumphal arch as described by the president, and it is currently unclear how his announcement will affect construction that was expected to begin this month.
