Michelle Williams Is Back In College And Studying Psychology: ‘I’m Going To Finish Strong’

Michelle Williams is heading back to the classroom.

The former Destiny’s Child member revealed this week that she is enrolled at Regent University, where she is currently a sophomore studying psychology. Williams shared the news on Instagram, admitting that she initially kept her return to school quiet—even from some of the people closest to her.

“Chiiiiiiiiile, your girl is back in school!!” Williams wrote.

The singer explained that uncertainty about whether she would complete her degree nearly kept her from publicly sharing the milestone.

“I talked myself out of posting this! I didn’t even tell family and friends because of the intrusive thought ‘what if you don’t finish?’” she wrote. “I’m going to finish and I’m going to finish strong.”

Among those cheering her on is her longtime friend and former Destiny’s Child groupmate Kelly Rowland, who celebrated Williams in the comments.

“My Love!!! You GOT THIS!!! It goes without saying, my heart is so full!!” Rowland wrote. “This is YOUR TIME!”

Williams also brought her signature humor to the announcement, revealing her chosen field of study: “Sophomore at @regentuniversity studying psychology because y’all need help! LOLOL (just kidding….kinda).”

She added that her advisors and professors have been supportive so far before asking followers to “pray for my endurance and focus.”

The decision marks something of a full-circle moment for Williams. Before becoming one-third of one of the biggest girl groups in music history, she attended Illinois State University, where she studied criminal justice for two years. She ultimately left college to pursue music, first working as a backing vocalist before joining Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland in Destiny’s Child in 2000.

More than two decades later, Williams’ choice to study psychology also connects with an issue she has spent years discussing publicly: mental health.

Williams has spoken candidly about experiencing depression and seeking professional treatment. In 2021, she released her memoir, Checking In: How Getting Real About Depression Saved My Life—and Can Save Yours, which explored her mental health journey and encouraged others to seek support.

Now, after a career that has taken her from Grammy-winning success with Destiny’s Child to solo music, Broadway and television, Williams is returning to an unfinished chapter on her own terms—with her former groupmate firmly in her corner.

And this time, she has already declared how she intends for the story to end: “I’m going to finish strong.”
