There is something so refreshing about Momo Boyd.
Maybe it’s the way she’s banded together with her siblings, Abraham, Angel, and Israel Boyd, to create the beloved musical group Infinity Song. Their sound? A mix of soul and rock, and is at once nostalgic and grounded in the present.
At the same time, she’s managing to carve her own separate, but equally brilliant, lane for herself. Lately, that looks like being featured on songs like Baby Keem’s “Good Flirt,” and dropping her own debut album, Miss Michigan, which has catchy tunes like “Oops.”
And, even more recently, she’s been traveling the world for her tour, The Miss Michigan Tour. “I had a themed tour, so each night had a different theme based off of songs from my project,” she shares with ESSENCE following her stop in NYC, which took place at The Bowery Ballroom.
“The theme for New York was based on my song, ‘Oops,’” she shares. “‘Oops’ is very ‘90s to me,” hence the music video being so classic and nostalgic. “So I wanted the night to reflect that as well. I saw a lot of feathers in the crowd. I saw half-up, half-down hairstylists. I saw a ‘Clueless’ plaid look. There was even a Penny Proud-like look, and also someone who looked like they were straight out from ‘BAPS,’” she adds.
Speaking of feathers, “I had these feather gloves on and a super cute corset. It was just very girly, very Hillary Banks-esque,” she adds about the look, styled by Juliana DaSilva. On the beauty front, her fans were also on the same wavelength. Her trusted hairstylist, Marin, gave her a silk press and a half-up-half-down style as well.
Makeup-wise, her makeup artist, Imary Mezquita, gave her a glowy, rosy look. Boyd shares she also can’t go anywhere without her lip combo: NYX’s Hot Cocoa Lip Liner, and the NYC Strawberry Cheesecake Gloss. The show that night
Ahead of the performance itself, her grounding rituals came in handy. “I just went to go get food with one of my friends, and I felt like that was what I needed,” she says. “It was a moment of normalcy before I went into the whirlwind of everything. It’s important for me to step outside of the venue, walk around, get fresh air, sunlight, get some food in my body, and have a conversation,” she adds. “With the shows, it’s easy to get caught in the cycle of going from the hotel to the venue, etc.”
Now that her US leg of the tour has wrapped, Boyd is looking forward to her upcoming tour stops in Europe, and is currently working on new music. “I’m just trying to go deeper in my sound and have a bit more fun,” she says. “It’s all about taking certain risks, while still staying true to self.”
While she prepares for the upcoming tour, below, Boyd shares a behind the scenes look at her getting ready process ahead of her NYC show.
