Today, Netflix has renewed A Different World for a second season following its September 24 premiere. Created by Felicia Pride, the show debuted at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 4.2 million views and reached the Top 10 in 15 countries, according to the streamer.
Season 2 will pick up as Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, returns to Hillman for her sophomore year. The daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert will reunite with classmates Rashida Duvall, Shaquille Johnson, Amir Rodale, Hazel Henry and Kojo Achebe following their summer break. Their next year will bring new relationships while forcing the group to reckon with choices made during freshman year and questions about what comes next.
The renewal continues Hillman’s return nearly four decades after the original A Different World premiered on NBC. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprised their roles as Whitley and Dwayne in the first season, with several original cast members also returning. Cree Summer appeared again as Freddie Brooks, while Darryl M. Bell returned as Ron Johnson. Jada Pinkett Smith and Dawnn Lewis were among the other familiar faces who made their way back to Hillman.
Pride serves as creator, showrunner and executive producer. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original sitcom, returned to direct and executive produce the sequel.
Netflix has not announced a premiere date for Season 2.
