Bridal Bliss: At Chelsea Miller And Anthony Barr’s Cali Wedding, The Bride Was The DJ

Some people think it takes one defining moment to realize that you’ve fallen in love. While that is true in some love stories, it’s often a series of micro moments.

Los Angeles natives Chelsea and Anthony crossed paths many times before the universe decided it was time for their stars to align. After overlooking a DM from him in 2016, Chelsea and the then-NFL player connected years later at a private gym in Hollywood.

“It’s funny to think we spent so much time in the same places, around the same people, and somehow it took all those years for us to finally connect,” Chelsea, also known as DJ Millie, tells ESSENCE.

She says the former athlete asked her out to dinner and they’ve been inseparable since. “I guess the timing was always meant to be.”

It took a culmination of mundane experiences, like catching Chelsea’s loving gaze, spending time together with family, and missing her when they were apart, for Anthony to know she was his person.

“All of those things became such a strong foundation for me,” Barr says. “At some point, I realized I didn’t want to imagine my life without her.”

As for Chelsea, she realized, during the early stages of their relationship, that she’d met her husband. He showed her what a “real man” is, she says, adding that they naturally balanced one another out. She does say a particular moment stands out, though. While on vacation in Maui, they went on an excursion to see turtles and fell down a hill. What could have been a catastrophic, embarrassing moment ended in a shared, loving experience.

“We just sat there cracking up and then started making out,” she recounted. “It felt like this perfect little rom-com moment, and I remember thinking, ‘This is what love is supposed to feel like.’ I knew he was the one.”

The couple eventually got engaged in 2025 and tied the knot a little over a year later on August 29 at the scenic Santa Ynez Ranch Winery in California. The unspoken theme was timeless elegance—everything from the bridal party to guests and decor exuded style and grace.

Here’s more on their love story, what they’re most excited about for married life, and photos from their stunning wedding day in this week’s Bridal Bliss.

ESSENCE: When did the engagement take place?

Chelsea: Anthony proposed on August 10 on a yacht in Newport Beach. There’s nothing we love more than being on the water together, so it honestly didn’t feel out of the norm at all. The weather was perfect, we had some champagne, and Anthony was taking pictures of me. Then I turned around and he was on one knee. I was completely surprised. All the boats around us started honking and yelling congratulations, and it was just such a magical moment.

Afterward, he had another surprise waiting for me. Both of our families and friends were at a private beach club right on the water waiting to celebrate with us. Having everyone we love there made the whole day feel even more special. It was perfect.

What were your favorite moments from the day?

Chelsea: Definitely when I got on to DJ. The party was my main focus all along, which obviously checks out because I’m a DJ! I really wanted to throw the biggest and best party of my life, and it ended up being even more fun than I imagined. Everyone went so hard, let loose, and genuinely had the best time. Looking out at the crowd and seeing all of the people I love most having that much fun was a feeling I can’t even put into words. Anthony was right behind me cheering me on, and somehow, with this huge party happening around us, it still felt like no one else was in the room but the two of us.

Anthony: Seeing Chelsea walk down the aisle with her dad was easily one of my favorite moments. Seeing how emotional he was and how unbelievably beautiful she looked was truly breathtaking. I’ll never forget that moment. Being a huge foodie, I also have to mention the food. From cocktail hour to dinner and dessert, everything was incredible. Shoutout to Dustin and the Dockside team for knocking it out of the park. And then, of course, the reception. The dance floor was packed from start to finish. Watching Chelsea DJ and seeing everyone we love having the time of their lives was so special. We threw one hell of a party, and getting to experience it all with my wife made it even better.

What are you most excited about when it comes to married life and the future?

Chelsea: I’m excited for this next chapter and to finally settle down. I’ve spent so many years nonstop, DJing and traveling the world, and while I never want to stop doing what I love, I’m excited to experience it all with Anthony by my side. Being a wife and a mother are two things I’ve always dreamed of. I’m looking forward to bringing our families together, creating new memories, and growing old with my best friend.

Anthony: I think what I’m most excited for is to be able to do life with Chelsea. Life is crazy. Life is short. It’s fleeting. You know, it goes by so quickly. There’s so many ups and downs, tragedies, triumphs, accomplishments, failures, and to be able to experience that and share that and to be there for her throughout all of it is something I’m really excited for. And then to be a father. You know, I didn’t really have a dad growing up, and I’ve always dreamt of being a father and being active, present, and responsible, and a father that can be trusted and counted on. I know I’ll thrive in that role. And, you know, I’d like multiple kids. I’d like a big family. So I’m just really looking forward to the potential of that, God willing.
