Trump cyber heckles Sen. Tom Cotton over daylight saving time

President Donald Trump took a sundown fight with Sen. Tom Cotton public on Saturday.

The president posted on social media what appeared to be the Arkansas Republican’s cell phone number, expressing anger over the senator’s opposition to legislation making daylight saving time permanent.

“For some reason, Tom is stopping the Bill and, in the Senate, it’s very easy to do, it only takes one!” Trump wrote on Truth Social about the Sunshine Protection Act, which has been held up in the Senate. He described Cotton as “a friend of mine,” but nevertheless urged his followers to “call Tom on his cellphone” before posting a phone number with a northeast Arkansas area code.

An MS NOW call to that number went to voicemail, and its mailbox was full. Cotton’s office did not immediately respond to MS NOW’s requests for comment. But the senator explained his opposition to the bill in a post on X on Saturday afternoon, without addressing Trump’s efforts to direct a horde of angry callers his way.

The senator said he includes himself among those who do no like changing the clocks each spring and fall. “But Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter,” Cotton said. “Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.”

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said on X that he agreed with Cotton, adding, “And he should not have been doxxed.”

In his post, Trump listed several arguments in favor of making daylight saving time permanent — which would allow for more daylight in the afternoon — including, he suggested, for professional golf tournaments to take place through the day.

“The PGA TOUR, as an example, needs more Daylight in the afternoon in order to finish their Tournaments,” Trump wrote. “Likewise, regular Golfers, Tennis Players, Hunters and, perhaps most importantly, Farmers who want more Daylight to play or work.”

Cotton is a longtime opponent of making daylight saving time permanent. But he is not the only Republican senator who objects to the legislation, and it’s unclear why Trump singled him out.

The president also did so in a lengthy Truth Social post on Friday that named Cotton. And he called out Cotton for the third time in another Truth Social post Saturday, accusing him of holding up the bill in the Senate out of “ego.”

Trump has resorted to publicly sharing other people’s personal phone numbers in the past. As a presidential candidate in 2015, he revealed Sen. Lindsey Graham’s number in a campaign speech. In a eulogy at Graham’s memorial service in July this year, Trump joked about it and said it ultimately marked “the beginning of our friendship, in a way.”

He also posted a number that was meant to be that of a Republican state lawmaker in Michigan as part of his election denial efforts after the 2020 election. That number, however, belonged to a private citizen who told The Washington Post at the time that they received thousands of angry, threatening calls and texts as a result.
