Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* There are plenty of Republican incumbents who don’t want to be seen with Donald Trump right now, but the phenomenon isn’t limited to blue states: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that when the president holds an event in San Antonio this week, he won’t be in attendance. The governor said he has other campaign events planned and won’t be available.
Whether the excuse is valid or not is an open question, but Abbott’s comments came on the heels of a New York Times/Siena University poll that found Democrat Gina Hinojosa leading the incumbent governor, 49% to 46%.
* In Maine’s closely watched U.S. Senate race, the latest Marist Poll found Democrat Troy Jackson leading incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins, 51% to 47%. The results were nearly identical to the latest AARP poll, which showed Jackson up, 50% to 47%.
The Marist poll found a far less competitive gubernatorial race in the state: Democrat Hannah Pingree leads Republican Bobby Charles by 12 points, 52% to 40%.
* Speaking of increasingly uncompetitive gubernatorial races, the latest New York Times/Siena University poll found state Auditor Rob Sand in a strong position in Iowa, leading Republican businessman Zach Lahn, 52% to 41%.
* In Ohio’s closely watched gubernatorial race, the same New York Times/Siena University poll showed the Democratic former state health director, Amy Acton narrowly leading Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, 49% to 45%.
* With Republicans starting to give up on North Carolina’s Senate race, grudgingly coming to the conclusion that Republican Michael Whatley is likely to lose to former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, some Democratic entities are also starting to redirect resources elsewhere.
* On Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer doesn’t yet know whether his party will regain a majority in the chamber, but the New York Democrat confirmed to Politico that he intends to maintain his leadership post. “I am running for re-election for leader,” Schumer said. “Period.”
* JD Vance headlined a campaign event in Florida last week, where the vice president said, in reference to Democratic Senate hopeful Angie Nixon, “Get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America.”
* And speaking of Florida, Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts Mike Caruso was arrested in August on allegations he molested a small child. The Republican incumbent, who has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing, is running for re-election anyway — and he continues to enjoy the support of the local Republican Party.
