Russian oligarch says Trump Jr. repaid cost of wedding party, but the controversy lingers

It’s been nearly a month since ProPublica reported that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, had “secretly bankrolled” part of Donald Trump Jr.’s recent wedding celebration, footing the bill for “hundreds of thousands of dollars of wedding expenses.”

“It’s not clear why Kremlev helped pay for Trump Jr.’s wedding,” ProPublica added. “The men appear to have met only recently.”

Asked about the revelations, the groom’s father, Donald Trump Sr., told reporters soon after the news broke, “I understand that Don’s paying them back.” On this, the president’s understanding was apparently correct. The Associated Press reported:

The Russian oligarch who helped bankroll Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration says the president’s eldest son has paid back the money.

“Yes, he did,” Umar Kremlev told an International Boxing Association press conference in Istanbul on Tuesday. “He did repay the money I spent on the present.”

The same AP report went on to note that, as far as Kremlev is concerned, the alleged repayment was unnecessary.

“Frankly speaking, I do not understand why he decided to do so,” he said. “There are all kinds of events organized by all kinds of people. It is as if I invite you to come and visit my country house. Would you expect me to issue an invoice to them afterward?” Speaking through an interpreter, he said that would be “ridiculous.”

At least for now, we don’t yet know the exact size of the reimbursement or the timeline. For that matter, there’s been no independent confirmation that the repayment actually happened, and it’s an open question as to whether Kremlev’s assurances should be accepted at face value.

But just as notable is the fact that the underlying controversy remains unresolved, even if Trump Jr. wrote a six-figure check.

Indeed, the circumstances remain just as scandalous now as they were when ProPublica first uncovered them: A Putin-aligned Russian oligarch paid for the wedding party of the sitting American president’s oldest son. No one could explain why this happened or what the Russian might have wanted or expected in return.

Republican Sen. John Curtis of Utah said in a video posted to social media last month, “A Russian oligarch paid for a lavish wedding after-party for Donald Trump Jr., which to me just stinks. It’s corruption. I don’t like it.” A week later, the Utahn wrote to leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee, calling for an investigation into the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit, preferential treatment or access by domestic and foreign interests.

“A toaster is a wedding gift,” Curtis added in an online statement. “A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else. Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden’s foreign relationships. We should not unplug it now. ‘Trust us’ was not enough then, and it is not enough now.”

Soon after, four additional GOP senators backed up Curtis, saying the matter is worthy of Senate scrutiny.

The fact that this happened at all raises counterintelligence concerns that warrant investigation. The apparent reimbursement is a step in the larger story, but it’s hardly the final step.
