Trump scrambles to rewrite recent history on his efforts against Obama, Biden and Clinton

During a brief Q&A with reporters last week, Donald Trump was asked about the possibility of being impeached for a third time in the next Congress if there’s a Democratic majority in the House. The president initially replied with joke, saying he’s “getting good at” being impeached before reflecting on the recent past.

“We could’ve done that with [Joe Biden], but we didn’t do it because it would’ve been inappropriate,” Trump added. “I could’ve done that with Hillary Clinton, as you know. I had the chance to do it if I wanted, and I said that would be inappropriate.”

This week, he elaborated on this and went a little further. MS NOW reported:

President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday that he could do “whatever I want,” including potentially taking action against prominent Democrats such as former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“I could have done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could have done very, very bad things to Joe Biden. I could have done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama,” Trump said in response to a reporter asking whether he could face another impeachment if Democrats gain control of the House in November.

As part of the same exchange, the Republican went on to say, “I thought it was inappropriate to do so because you have to treat the office of the presidency with respect.”

Trump: “I could’ve done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could’ve done very very bad things to Joe Biden. I could’ve done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama … I can do whatever I want, if I want.”

That Trump explicitly said, “I can do whatever I want, if I want” was an unsettling summary of his radical views on presidential power. But I was also struck by his brazen rewriting of what actually happened in recent years.

To hear Trump tell it, he was so concerned about norms and propriety that he made a deliberate decision not to do “very bad things” to Democrats like Biden. But for those of us who actually remember last year, it was in June 2025 when the Republican president explicitly directed the Justice Department to launch a wide-ranging investigation into the former Democratic president, based on conspiracy theories about his mental acuity.

This was the first time in the nation’s history that an incumbent American president publicly ordered a federal probe into his predecessor.

A day later, the Republican conceded that he had no evidence whatsoever of Biden having done anything wrong.

“You know, it’s just one of those things,” Trump said, trying to justify the DOJ directive.

Similarly, Trump also apparently expects Americans to believe he’s expressed no interest in going after Obama. As recently as five months ago, Trump used his social media platform to amplify a message that called for Obama to be arrested and charged with treason.

“Arrest them all. Prosecute them all. Incarcerate them all at once for treachery, treason, and seditious conspiracy to overthrow the United States government. But first, Barack Obama,” the post read.

Trump pushed a similar message in February, which came a month after another flurry of online madness that included accusations that Obama had committed “treason,” followed by a separate missive that concluded, “ARREST OBAMA NOW.” Last summer, the Republican similarly posted an avalanche of odd content to his platform, including calls for criminal charges against Obama.

But the idea that Trump left Clinton alone is arguably the most ridiculous of them all.

In Trump’s first year in the White House, the president publicly pleaded with the DOJ to go after Clinton. A year later, in 2018, Trump told the White House counsel that he wanted to order the DOJ to prosecute Clinton. As former special counsel Robert Mueller documented in his findings, it was around this time that Trump directly pressured then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to target Clinton.

Ahead of Election Day 2020 — nearly four years after Clinton’s defeat — Trump again publicly called for the Democrat’s incarceration and lobbied then-Attorney General Bill Barr to prosecute Clinton for unspecified reasons.

None of this a secret. It happened out in the open. We all saw it play out in public. Trump might be eager to brag about his perceived magnanimity, but he’s asking us to forget what we all saw with our own eyes.
