Nine people, including a suspected shooter, were killed in a mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday.
“My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community,” Shapiro said of the Friday shooting in a statement. He said he has spoken to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered his administration’s “full support.”
According to The Associated Press, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah told a local news station, “I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years. I’m not sure that the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and the devastation that we just witnessed.”
Information about the shooting remained scant on Saturday. According to Erie authorities, police officers arrived at the scene “within minutes” of an alert. All casualties occurred prior to officers’ response to the shooting, and no deaths were the result of a prolonged standoff, authorities said.
According to local news outlet Fox 8, Lorah confirmed that the suspected shooter died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators had not yet determined a motive in the shooting.
Mass gun violence is a uniquely American phenomenon. There have been 365 mass shootings in 2026, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as at least four victims shot — whether injured or killed — not including the shooter.
