MS NOW’s Joe Scarborough said Donald Trump is “bowing down” to Vladimir Putin after the president announced he would temporarily lift sanctions and allow millions of tons of fuel to be imported to the U.S. from Russia. The “Morning Joe” co-host said Trump’s choice to strike a deal with Putin amid his brutal war with Ukraine draws parallels to the historical appeasement by prominent Western figures who held strong pro-Nazi sympathies and shared a favorable view of Adolf Hitler.
The agreement, which Trump announced Friday in a social media post after a call with the Russian leader, comes just weeks after he signed a sweeping Russia sanctions law, tailored to cut Moscow off from many of the resources it needs to continue its war against Ukraine.
“Trump got on the phone with Vladimir Putin, who always plays him,” Scarborough said Tuesday morning. “And what happened? He lifted sanctions.”
As the MS NOW host noted, energy experts are skeptical the deal will have any real effect on fuel prices in the U.S. “The White House says his gift to Putin will lower prices at the pump, but it won’t,” Scarborough said.
He also suggested the president’s reversal of longstanding U.S. policy follows in the footsteps of other historical figures who were sympathetic to strongmen, such as Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor and former king of England. After Edward abdicated the throne, he toured Nazi Germany and met with Hitler. In the U.S., Scarborough noted that Charles Lindbergh, whom he called an “American hero,” also became a prominent Nazi sympathizer and delivered speeches in which he “blamed Jews and the British for pushing America toward war.”
Scarborough pointed to British aristocrats, such as Lord Astor and Lord Halifax, who pushed the government to appease Nazi Germany. “[They] thought Hitler was a man they could do business with. Does that sound familiar?” he asked.
“The reason sounded so respectable: trade, stability, money, peace in our time. History remembers them now as morally vacuous opportunists who looked at a tyrant who was devouring his neighbors. The only thing they saw: a business partner,” he continued.
Scarborough then addressed the president directly, warning him where his appeasement of Putin could lead. “Donald, I’ve known you a long time, and I know you don’t read history, so let me tell you how this story ends,” he said. “The Duke of Windsor ended up a footnote, a cautionary tale in a fancy suit, forever assigned to the dustbin of British history.”
The MS NOW host said Trump’s time to “finally do the right thing in Ukraine” is “running out” and advised the president to “stop bowing down to Putin and start doing your job”
“And I know you may not have been told this, but as president of the United States, doing your job means defending countries against invading Russian armies and expanding the borders of Western freedom,” he said. “If you don’t, then as with Hitler, you can bet that Poland, the Baltics, and the rest of Europe will be Putin’s next target. It’s past time that you get to work.”
