Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.
* In Minnesota’s closely watched U.S. Senate race, GOP nominee Michele Tafoya launched a new campaign ad this week in which she identified herself as “a pro-choice Republican” as evidence of her willingness to “stand up” to her party.
What the ad neglected to mention was that Tafoya celebrated the demise of Roe v. Wade. And just a few months ago, she appeared on a conservative podcast and said, “Here’s the deal. I’m in line with President Trump on this. So if people voted for President Trump and support him on this issue, then they should have no problem voting for me.”
The latest Minnesota Star Tribune/KARE 11 poll, released this week, found Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan leading Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter who has never held public office, 47% to 43%.
* In Texas’ closely watched statewide races, the latest Marist poll found Democratic state Rep. James Talarico leading Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton by 2 points (47% to 45%) in their U.S. Senate race, while the latest University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll showed Talarico ahead by 3 points (50% to 47%.)
In related news, in Paxton’s latest leaked recording, the scandal-plagued Republican, among other things, conceded that Gov. Greg Abbott is struggling in his bid for re-election. The latest polls suggest that’s true: The Marist poll found the incumbent governor leading Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa by 4 points (49% to 45%), while the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll showed Abbott ahead by just a point (49% to 48%).
* While Republicans weren’t too concerned about Nebraska’s U.S. Senate race, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC aligned with the Senate GOP’s leadership, is now making an $8 million investment in the state in the hopes of rescuing Sen. Pete Ricketts. The incumbent is facing a spirited challenge from independent Dan Osborn.
* In Maine’s closely watched U.S. Senate race, the latest Suffolk University poll showed Democrat Troy Jackson with a narrow advantage over incumbent Republican Susan Collins, 49% to 47%.
* In Kansas’ closely watched U.S. Senate race, Republicans have deployed longtime GOP strategist Chris Grant in the hopes of rescuing Sen. Roger Marshall’s struggling candidacy. Donald Trump has also scheduled a visit to Kansas next week to boost the incumbent senator.
* Speaking of the president, he told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that Republican Sen. Jon Husted “went up 9 points” roughly 12 hours after Trump held a rally in Ohio. No such poll exists in reality.
