The bystander who police say fatally shot the teenager suspected of opening fire at an Oregon elementary school has been identified as Kaylub Giamanco, NBC News and The New York Times reported Friday.
According to The Associated Press, Giamanco is the father of two girls who attend Silver Rail Elementary School, where a shooting Thursday afternoon left three children and one teacher dead.
Giamanco’s mother, Kenda Freeman, said in a statement Friday that her son is not “seeking recognition but instead wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school personnel and community for the outpouring of love and support.”
Freeman gave the statement to reporters outside of a home near the school, according to the AP.
Police responded to multiple reports of a person with a long gun entering Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday afternoon and opening fire. A preliminary investigation indicated that the shooter forced his way into the school by firing at locked doors.
By the time police arrived at the school, minutes after the initial 911 calls, officers found that the suspect had been fatally shot.
Victims killed in the shooting include children ages 5, 8 and 11, as well as a teacher at the school, police said. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to St. Charles Bend hospital and remain in critical condition.
The suspect has been identified as a 16-year-old male Bend resident.
President Donald Trump on Friday praised the bystander who confronted the suspect, calling him a “great hero.”
“There was a great hero,” Trump told reporters. “He took care of business, and thank God we had him,” Trump said. “Otherwise, it would have been much worse. It’s a terrible thing, but thank goodness for a man that had a gun and knew how to use it.”
