In her young adulthood, Umerova, who was raised in Tashkent, discovered in Europe what she hoped to create at home. “I’d never seen museums like the Pompidou, which was so extravagant to me at the time,” she recalls. “I was inspired not just by the arts but the buildings that house them. I felt like I would love to do something like that in my own country.”
