Expect Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood to be awash in the black, green and gold of the Jamaican flag on Saturday, August 8, as participants and spectators come out in numbers for the inaugural Jamaica Day Parade.

The buzz surrounding the event has been building steadily in New York City and beyond.

“The response has been absolutely incredible. The first-ever Jamaica Rising Day Parade has grown beyond what anyone imagined,” organizers said.

According to Bill Tinglin, Ph.D., Chairman of the Founding Committee, the level of excitement reflects the significance of the moment. “This movement has gone viral, and we’re on track to make history with one of the biggest first-year Caribbean parades New York has ever seen,” said Tinglin.

With an expected historic huge turnout and crowd safety the highest priority, organizers have worked closely with city officials and public agencies to implement recommendations designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. This has led to an update in the route for the procession.

“The parade will now begin at Church Avenue and Ocean Avenue, proceed north along Ocean Avenue, and conclude at Lincoln Place near Empire Boulevard,” announced Lawman Lynch, Ph.D., Vice Chairman of the Founding Committee.

While the event will still kick off at 10:00 a.m., organizers also announced that the previously planned post-parade block party has been cancelled. However, entertainment and other celebratory activities will take place along the route, so attendees can still enjoy (or fulljoy as some Jamaicans say) the festivities.

Changes to the route and program should allow authorities to better manage the anticipated record-breaking attendance. “This decision was made based on recommendations from public safety officials so we can ensure the proper logistics, security and infrastructure are in place for what promises to be an historic celebration and to position the event for even greater success in the years ahead,” organizers stated.

The parade is a celebration of Jamaican culture and heritage, plus a recognition of the enduring contributions of Jamaicans to New York City and the world. This year’s theme: “Jamaica Rising: One People. One Legacy. One Future.”

Organizers are encouraging Jamaicans, friends of Jamaica and everyone who has ever been touched by the island’s vibrant culture to come out and make history.
“Bring your Jamaican flags. Bring your good vibes. Bring your family. Bring the kids. Bring your friends,” said Lynch. “If you love Jamaica, if you’re Jamaican by birth, Jamaican by heritage or simply Jamaican by association, this celebration is for you.”
