  • Steven Spielberg to Receive Holocaust Museum Houston’s 1998 LBJ Moral Courage Award

Houston, TX (Sept. 9, 1998) – Holocaust Museum Houston will honor Steven Spielberg with the Lyndon Baines Johnson Moral Courage Award on October 1, 1998, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. It was announced by E. D. Wulfe, Chairman of the Board of the Museum. The event is chaired by Barbara and Charles Hurwitz of Houston and honorary chairs are President and Mrs. George Bush. The event is sold out and the Museum expects 1,800 guests
to help honor the legendary filmmaker.

Holocaust Museum Houston honors Mr. Spielberg for bringing the subject of the Holocaust, with all of its atrocities and lessons, to mainstream America with Schindler’s List. This film was the catalyst that brought the Holocaust into American consciousness.

It is estimated that Schindler’s List has been seen by more than 75,000,000 people in theaters, and over 65,000,000 through television and millions more on home video. The film won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. But, the most important accomplishment of the film was to heighten awareness of the Holocaust world-wide and to communicate the importance of teaching the lessons to be learned from this tragic event.

Schindler’s List is used as a tool in middle and high schools across the country to teach tolerance, human rights, respect and the importance of standing against injustice. In the Fall of 1994, a videotape of the film, accompanied by a study guide, was sent as a donation from Steven Spielberg and Universal Pictures to every public, private and parochial high school in the
country. Last year, the Texas Education Association mandated that Holocaust studies be taught in United States History and World History, and Schindler’s List is frequently an important part of the curriculum.

Steven Spielberg has three major philanthropic causes to which he devotes his efforts. Funded by his personal profits from Schindler’s List, he established the Righteous Persons Foundation, which supports a wide breadth of Jewish causes.

Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation is Spielberg’s way of ensuring that the experiences of Holocaust Survivors are never forgotten, by capturing personal testimonies of survivors on film. The Foundation currently works in 54 countries and in 31 languages. Nearly 47,000 testimonies have already been taped. The Foundation is currently developing state-of-the-art digital technology which will enable these testimonies to be available to the
millions of users of the world-wide web.

Steven Spielberg is also the chairman of the Starbright Foundation, whose mission is to develop projects through the combined fields of pediatric health care, technology and entertainment, that empower seriously ill children to combat the emotional and medical challenges accompanying prolonged illness.

Through this exciting event, this and future generations will learn that the hatred and prejudice that fueled the Holocaust must be extinguished and that it must never happen again. Holocaust Museum Houston opened its doors on March 3, 1998 and has hosted nearly 150,000 visitors. The mission of the Museum is to promote awareness of the dangers of prejudice, hatred and violence against the lives of millions of Jews and other innocent victims. By fostering Holocaust remembrance, understanding and education, the Museum will educate students in our area, as
well as the general population about the uniqueness of that event an its ongoing lesson: that humankind must learn to live together in peace and harmony.

  • Spirlea Has a Second Chance to Bump a Williams

The 1997 US Open Semi-Final match between Irina Spirlea and tennis phenom Venus Williams is known more for the veteran Spirlea bumping the upstart than being the match that advanced Venus to her first Grand Slam final appearance.

In this year’s open, Spirlea is taking on Venus’ baby sister Serena.  Serena wears just as many beads in her conrows, but she has the advantage of broader shoulders and more-defined biceps & triceps.  Hmmm…If I were Spirlea, I wouldn’t try that bumping bit with baby sis…just saying :-D! M

  • When the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Town…Clear Your Calendar!

When the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Town...Clear Your Calendar! As a child in New York City, I grew up going to live performances of all sorts. But my first experience at an Alvin Ailey performance was like no other.  As I eased into my seat at New York City Center, I couldn’t help but notice the boldface names in attendance.  Yet as the lights dimmed, we were all the same and all equally transported into the world and artistry of Alvin Ailey.

While no two performances are the same, make sure to attend a performance of “Revelations.”  Revelations is a gospel-inspired masterpiece that will have you shouting encore long after the curtain is lowered on the final act.  Without seeing it, your artistic journey will not be complete.  And if you are lucky enough to attend a New Year’s Eve performance of Revelations, trust me…you won’t regret it! M

  • Producers of ‘Babylon 5’ Tap JPL’s Brain Power for New Series

Pasadena, CA (August 17, 1998) – Through a unique technology transfer program, space scientists and engineers have begun sharing their brain power with producers and writers at Babylonian Productions, producers of “Babylon 5” and the new science-fiction television series “Crusade.”

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will provide “Crusade” producers with new visions of technology and will assist them in portraying science and astronomy as accurately as possible, forecasting science and technology issues circa the year 2250.

The producers, whose “Crusade” debuts on Turner Network Television (TNT) in January, were able to tap JPL’s expertise by participating in the lab’s Technology Affiliates Program, through which businesses form strategic alliances with JPL either to license intellectual property or to gain access to JPL’s engineers and scientists to help solve technological problems. To date, more than 120 companies, large and small, have utilized the program to solve upwards of 200 specific technology challenges.

“It’s exciting for us to be able to share knowledge from the space program in order to help ensure the realism and accuracy of popular science-fiction programming,” said Joan Horvath, a business alliance manager with the Technology Affiliates Program.

“We have a very challenging task before us on the production side, visualizing and creating different planets and planetary bodies complete with civilizations, flora and fauna,” said “Crusade” producer John Copeland. “The scientists and engineers at JPL will be advising us on how to depict the future.”

Copeland became aware of JPL’s capabilities in large part through his acceptance of an invitation by the Caltech Management Association (CMA) to speak about “Babylon 5” to JPL employees last spring. JPL engineer Michael Eastwood, a CMA events co- chair, explained, “As a thank-you, we gave the ‘Babylon 5’ team a lab tour. John Copeland was excited and impressed with what he saw and called me two days later asking how we might all work together more closely. The Technology Affiliates Program was a perfect fit.”

“Crusade” and “Babylon 5” are produced in association with J. Michael Straczynski’s Synthetic Worlds, Ltd. and Netter Digital Entertainment, Inc. under Babylonian Productions. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology.
