Today’s edition of quick hits.

* The latest on the ICE shooting in Austin: “The Venezuelan man shot by an immigration officer in Austin over the weekend was taken to a hospital late Monday after experiencing paralysis on the left side of his body, his lawyer said. Attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch also has filed a lawsuit in Texas asking a federal court to order the immediate release of Wilber Garcés Pérez from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention and halt his potential deportation to Venezuela.”

* On a related note, The Atlantic reported that the as-yet unidentified ICE officer “was a recent hire who was not wearing his body camera.”

* It’s tough to pick the very worst part of Donald Trump’s address to the U.N. General Assembly, but it was arguably the point at which the president said he was weighing whether to “annihilate” Iran, adding that he could drive the nation into “hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations.”

* This story is just now starting to become a big deal, and it’s worth watching closely: “Key lawmakers are pushing back after reports revealed that the Trump administration is seeking even greater control over the National Institutes of Health grantmaking process. The effort, first reported by The Washington Post, includes potentially issuing an executive order or White House review of grants to weed out research contrary to President Donald Trump’s agenda.”

* If this reporting is accurate, it points to a problem that goes well beyond intra-administration tensions: “When housing chief Bill Pulte examined the mortgages of President Trump’s political adversaries last year, he also looked at those of Attorney General Todd Blanche, according to people familiar with the matter. That effort occurred as Pulte clashed with Blanche, who was then the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, over investigations related to the adversaries’ mortgage records.”

* I’ll look forward to Brits coming up with some clever antonym to “Brexit,” because I can’t think of one: “Will Labour go into the next general election campaigning to reverse Brexit? Andy Burnham says that’s ‘a question for another day.’ Quizzed by reporters ahead of a meeting with the president of the European Commission, the U.K. prime minister left the door open to making the manifesto commitment — which is backed by some in his party.”

* A case of interest: “A federal judge on Monday dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by Stefan Passantino, a former lawyer for onetime White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, against MS NOW legal analyst and law professor Andrew Weissmann.”
