It’s been nearly a full month since Karoline Leavitt’s official last day as White House press secretary, and Donald Trump still hasn’t named her successor. In modern American history, no president has ever gone this long without naming an official spokesperson.

That said, the White House press shop has patched together a temporary structure. MS NOW reported:

Danielle Alvarez, a former campaign spokesperson for Trump, has taken on a senior role to help bridge the long transition. Jason Miller, a longtime Trump adviser, has also moved into a senior messaging role — although he did so before Leavitt left.

But neither Alvarez nor Miller intends to host press briefings, according to one of the people describing internal dynamics.

Whether Miller ever stands behind the podium or not, it’s of interest that he’s working at the White House at all.

The president’s original plan was to add Miller to his team in the first term, when the longtime Republican operative was named as the White House communications director. That didn’t quite work out. As The Washington Post reported:

Trump had initially appointed Miller as his communications director after winning his 2016 campaign. After allegations broke of an extramarital affair with a Trump campaign staff member, Miller announced he would not accept the White House role. Miller, who was married, later confirmed he was fathering a son born to the staffer and remained with his wife.

Despite the scandal, Miller reportedly remained close with Trump, and the operative was brought on in 2020 to serve as a senior adviser to the president’s ill-fated re-election campaign.

After Trump lost, Miller shifted into a lobbying role, even becoming a registered foreign agent before ultimately taking on White House responsibilities that he was supposed to have a decade ago.

There’s a small group of officials who were considered too scandalous for Team Trump in the president’s first term but who have nevertheless been welcomed to the team in his second term. Miller joins that exclusive, ignominious club.
