  • The weekend of Andy Burnham’s life

This post was originally published on Politico.

Andy Burnham is set to become Labour leader on Friday, July 17 and British prime minister on Monday, July 20. In between, on Sunday, July 19, England could win the World Cup (no, really).

For Burnham, a lifelong soccer fan, it would be quite the weekend.

Some commentators — including IPSOS pollster Keiran Pedley — have even suggested that, in such circumstances, Burnham should call a snap election to ride a wave of national euphoria and secure his own political mandate.

Given Labour’s commanding majority in Parliament, that is unlikely to happen. But the suggestion hints at soccer’s extraordinary power

  • In Springfield, Ohio, Trump’s rhetoric becomes a grim reality

Having lived with Donald Trump’s infamous and baseless insult against them — “they’re eating the dogs … they’re eating the cats” — Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, are bracing for a far bigger injury.

More than 10,000 Haitians across Ohio and hundreds of thousands more around the country who had Temporary Protected Status now face the imminent prospect of deportation. The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration can halt those legal protections for Haitians and Syrians and resume forcing them to leave.

Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion for the court’s Republican-appointed majority curbed the power of courts to review government decisions to terminate protections under the TPS program.

“They side with him on everything that he says or everything that he does, which means there is no check and balance,” said Viles Dorsainvil, a Haitian TPS holder and executive director of the Haitian Support Center in Springfield, a town Trump catapulted into a maelstrom of misinformation about immigrants when he was running to retake the White House in 2024.

“The president has that freeway in front of him to do whatever he wants to do, unfortunately, and most of the time to a minority group of people,” added Dorsainvil, who has lived in the United States since 2020.

In a country rife with political and economic instability, Haitians returning from the U.S. are in danger of being killed or kidnapped, said Dorsainvil’s colleague at the Haitian Support Center, Rose Thamar Joseph.

“There is this perception in Haiti that if you are living here in the United States, you have money, so you are living your good life, so sending people back to Haiti will put them in real danger,” Joseph said.

Staying in the U.S. without legal status creates a different crisis.

“We received calls this morning from people saying that, unfortunately, starting on July 1, they won’t be able to go to work anymore,” Joseph said Friday.

Joseph predicted that families would be separated during the deportation process.

“We know that there will be separation,” she said. “A lot of those parents with TPS … they have kids who were born in the United States, so we know that it will happen, not for everybody, not for all the families, but it will happen,” she said.

The oncoming nightmare for the Haitian community in Springfield was, in many ways, predictable after Trump notoriously targeted them on the debate stage against then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the fall of 2024.

“They are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there,” Trump said without a shred of evidence, greatly amplifying an unfounded rumor that had been confined to smaller corners of social media.

That rhetoric continued Trump’s track record of racist language, particularly when it comes to immigration, including during his first White House stint when he referred during his first to Haiti and other majority non-white nations as “shithole” countries.

Dorsainvil argued that the Supreme Court’s decision Thursday proved his beliefs are institutionalized, calling it “a validation of all those bad rhetorics of the president against us.”

Asked by MS NOW if those with TPS should expect to be deported, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said, “Well, of course. If you no longer have status in this country, then you’re supposed to be deported.”

Miller, the architect of the administration’s immigration policy, went on to single out the Haitian population by name.

But the outcry against the court’s ruling blurs party lines in Ohio.

“Changing the immigration status of these individuals is not in the best interest of the United States nor Ohio,” Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said.

Springfield’s Republican mayor, Rob Rue, has denounced Trump’s misinformation about his community as dangerous from the start.

“Many of the individuals affected by this decision are our neighbors, coworkers, business owners, taxpayers, and parents,” Rue said in a statement after the ruling came down. “They contribute to our local economy, support our schools, strengthen our neighborhoods, and have become part of the fabric of Springfield.”

  • Jeffries congratulates NYC democratic socialists on their House primary wins

After spending days fielding questions about the New York City democratic socialists who won their House primaries, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Saturday congratulated them — even the two who handily defeated incumbents Jeffries had backed.

“Congratulations to our newest members of the NYC congressional delegation. From public servants to union organizers to community activists, the path is different but the work is the same,” the New York Democrat wrote in a post on X. “We must decisively address the affordability crisis and crush far-right extremism!”

Jeffries also applauded other Democrats who won their House primaries on Saturday. But his post about New York City’s candidates was notable; three of four of them are Democratic Socialists of America candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Their wins on Tuesday fueled tensions between the party establishment and its left-wing faction — and raised questions about Jeffries’ political future.

In New York’s 10th congressional district, former City Comptroller Brad Lander defeated the Jeffries-endorsed Rep. Dan Goldman. In the 13th district, Darializa Avila Chevalier pulled off a stunning victory over Rep. Adriano Espaillat, whom Jeffries also backed. State Assembly member Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who had the endorsement of outgoing Rep. Nydia Velazquez in the 7th district.

Jeffries is not particularly popular among the left. At Valdez’s election night watch party, jubilant supporters booed and chanted “you’re next!” when Jeffries appeared on the screen.

Neither Chevalier nor Valdez has committed to backing Jeffries for House speaker if Democrats win control of the chamber in November, in contrast to Lander, who has said he would. When asked if she would support Jeffries in an interview with NBC News on Wednesday, Chevalier said: “That’s a conversation that I’ll be having with my coalition, with my community to make sure that we are coming to a decision about what is best for the people here in New York 13.”

Jeffries’ comments about the trio have been measured since Tuesday’s primaries. This week, when asked on CNBC about the taunting chants, Jeffries pointed to President Donald Trump.

“I’m happy to talk about primary elections in one of the bluest cities in the country. At the end of the day, listen, our focus is going to be on ending this national nightmare in this country that America is suffering: a reckless and costly war of choice that skyrocketed gas prices. The failure to lower costs was Donald Trump’s promise that he would do and a whole host of other challenges,” he replied.

Meanwhile, the DSA is hoping its victories in New York City can be replicated elsewhere. In Colorado, Melat Kiros, a democratic socialist running against incumbent Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette, announced endorsements from Valdez and Chevalier on Saturday.
