The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is the definitive hub of the daytime experience at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture. Among the various activations across the convention floor, one of the most anticipated highlights this year is Book Festival: ESSENCE Authors. The Author stage serves as a critical space for literature, intellectual discourse, and storytelling, focusing heavily on the power of the written word in Black culture. To deliver a comprehensive look at the current literary landscape, this year activation is strategically split into two distinct, curated programming tracks: fiction and nonfiction.

The nonfiction programming is curated by investigative journalist and author Nikole Hannah Jones. Known for her rigorous examination of history, civil rights, and systemic structures, her curated tracks focus on pressing societal issues, historical truths, and cultural commentary with a unique lens on America 250. Attendees can expect deep dive conversations that challenge perspectives and analyze the current social climate.

Complementing the nonfiction track is the fiction programming, curated by screenwriter and producer Mara Brock Akil. Celebrated for creating complex, nuanced Black characters on television, Akil brings that same eye for rich narrative structure to the literary stage. Her curated panels celebrate imaginative storytelling, exploring how fiction reflects human emotion, identity, culture, and relationships.

Beyond the curators, the Book Festival: ESSENCE Authors stage features a prominent lineup of speakers, authors, and cultural commentators. The schedule includes appearances by media executive and political commentator Tiffany D. Cross, legal scholar and civil rights advocate Kimberle Crenshaw, and writer and cultural critic Jamilah Lemieux. The lineup also features digital storyteller Taresa Ressa Teesa Johnson, alongside acclaimed novelists Tayari Jones and Ayana Gray, among other notable guests throughout the four day event.

To attend the daytime experience, guests must first register for free daytime access through the E360 app. Once registered, the app functions as a personal festival guide. Attendees can use it to review full daily schedules, save specific programming blocks, build a customized itinerary, and receive real time updates regarding stage schedules, panel changes, or surprise guest appearances.
