A new Wall Street Journal analysis found that the conservative podcasters who helped propel Donald Trump back into the White House are now losing interest in him. With just weeks until the midterms, Charlie Sykes told MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace that the reversal among some of the president’s once-ardent supporters shows that “people are tired of the Trump show.”

According to the analysis, which examined 70,000 hours of MAGA podcasts, mentions of Trump’s name per hour have fallen almost 70% from their peak in the run-up to the 2024 election. Sykes said the sharp drop showed that “people are exhausted” by the president less than two years into his second term.

The author and journalist told Wallace on Wednesday’s “Deadline: White House” that the tide had turned against Trump, especially among conservative influencers who feel they were tricked into believing that he would be a force for change upon his return to Washington.

“I think that’s part of this dynamic, that there is this sort of ‘all right, we’ve tried this, he obviously has not turned out the way that we told our audiences that he was going to behave, and now we’re just going to pivot to something else,’” Sykes said.

He told MS NOW that podcasters once thought it was “cool” and “edgy” to support Trump, but “that is long past.” He added, “I think a lot of these bros on the podcasts thought that this was a little bit countercultural, and now it’s just turning out to be ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’”

According to Sykes, the analysis shows that Trump has entered the “fat Elvis” stage of his political career. He likened the president to an aging performer who had become a diminished parody of his former self.
