MS NOW’s Chris Hayes said Republicans who have criticized the United States’ ongoing war with Iran finally had a chance to “put their money where their mouth was” on Thursday and rein in President Donald Trump, but instead they chose the president over the American people.

As the “All In” host explained, Trump’s war, now in its sixth month, has grown “acutely politically toxic.” According to the latest Economist/YouGov poll, 57% of Americans said going to war with Iran was the wrong decision. With the midterm elections quickly approaching, similar polls have motivated Republicans in competitive elections to speak out against the war.

“We’ve seen this, particularly in the last few weeks, that Republicans have been cutting ads and interviews calling for it to end,” Hayes said.

Earlier this week, incumbent Republican Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio, who is locked in a tough battle with Democrat Sherrod Brown, told Politico, “The war needs to come to an end as quickly as possible so that we can lower gas prices.”

Hayes said Republicans like Husted had a chance on Thursday to “put their money where their mouth was” and vote to limit Trump’s war powers in Iran. However, that measure failed 50 to 49.

“Nearly every Republican voted against it, choosing Trump over the American public,” he said.

The MS NOW host said he was baffled by Republicans’ continued support for the president’s unpopular war.

“I don’t think this is a conflict right now that is benefiting anyone,” he said. “Truly, I think it’s a classic lose-lose.”

Hayes said that if the Republican leadership had its way and “were the ones in the room” negotiating with Iran, they would “tear their arm off” to “try to find a deal.”
