There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when Black love meets Black joy against a backdrop most of us only dream about. That’s exactly what unfolded when friends and family gathered in Dubai to celebrate the wedding of Terrence J and Mikalah Sultan — a near weeklong, multi-sensory love letter to one of the most dazzling cities on earth. For the guests who made the journey, this was an experience layered with luxury, culture, and the kind of once-in-a-lifetime moments that reshape how you think about celebration itself.

For anyone who hasn’t been, it helps to know a little about where Dubai actually sits in the world. It’s the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, perched on the southeastern edge of the Persian Gulf, tucked into the Arabian Peninsula between the desert and the sea. Less than a century ago, Dubai was a modest fishing, pearling, and trading port — a place defined by its harbor, not its skyline. The discovery of oil in the 1960s, followed by the formation of the UAE in 1971, set off one of the most dramatic transformations of any city on the planet. In just a few decades, Dubai reinvented itself as a global hub for finance, tourism, and architecture, layering futuristic towers and manmade islands on top of a culture still rooted in Bedouin tradition, Islamic faith, and Emirati hospitality. That contrast — ancient customs living right alongside record-breaking modernity — is part of what makes the city feel so singular, and it’s the thread that ran through every day of this trip.

The trip opened with a bang — literally lights, colors, and music — at Global Village, Dubai’s sprawling cultural and entertainment destination. Guests were greeted by an explosion of color the moment they walked through the entrance, with performers on stage and vendors offering food from cultures spanning the globe. Beyond the sensory overload, Global Village gave guests something more personal: the chance to shop for traditional, custom pieces from artisans representing dozens of countries. It set the tone for the entire trip — a reminder that Dubai isn’t just about extravagance, but about the intersection of cultures that makes the city what it is.

If night one was about energy, day two was about elegance. Guests boarded a yacht for a party on the water, and the panoramic views of Dubai’s skyline delivered exactly the showstopping moment everyone had hoped for. The views of everything were so ethereal, and it’s hard to argue. Dubai’s skyline has a way of making even the most well-traveled guests pause. As my travel companion Kory Jarvis puts it, American cities may compete with each other for skyline bragging rights, but none of them come close to what Dubai offers. 

The glittering towers rising against brilliant blue water created a backdrop that felt almost otherworldly — a perfect setting for a weekend built around celebrating love. The yacht day was a masterclass in the kind of leisure that Dubai does better than almost anywhere: warm water, warmer company, and a skyline that looked like it was designed specifically for moments like this.

While the first two days delivered spectacle, day three delivered on shopping and soul. Before the wedding festivities even kicked off, guests carved out time to take in Dubai’s mall culture, and The Dubai Mall in particular lived up to its reputation as more of a destination than a shopping trip. It’s one of the largest malls in the world, home to everything from luxury flagship stores to a massive indoor aquarium, an ice rink, and direct access to the base of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on earth. Guests wandered through it the way you might tour a museum — pausing to watch the aquarium’s sharks glide by, catching the choreographed Dubai Fountain show just outside, and window shopping their way past labels most of us only see in magazines. It was a fitting overture to the trip: equal parts spectacle and indulgence, and a preview of just how much Dubai likes to do things bigger, brighter, and more beautifully than anywhere else.

A visit to Old Dubai gave guests a much deeper understanding of the city and the culture that built it, and for many, this was the emotional heart of the trip. The highlight came with a visit to a local mosque, where guests were invited to wear traditional garments, remove their shoes, and learn about the rhythms of daily prayer and the practice of fasting. It was described as one of the most meaningful moments of the entire journey — a chance to step outside the tourist experience and genuinely engage with Emirati culture and Islamic tradition. 

That thread of authenticity carried into the accommodations, too. Guests split their stay between the Atlantis Royal and the Atlantis The Palm, two properties that each brought their own flavor to the trip. While both delivered five-star luxury, guests noted that the architecture, art, and color palette throughout the properties captured an “old Dubai” warmth that grounded the glamour in something more textured and rooted. And then there was the service — the kind of hospitality Dubai has become famous for. One guest recalled wanting a traditional turban tied and simply calling down to the front desk; within minutes, someone arrived to do exactly that. It’s the kind of nothing-left-to-want experience that turns a vacation into a genuine escape. 

No Dubai trip is complete without a desert safari, and this group went all in. Guests loaded into 4x4s for a thrilling ride out into the dunes, complete with head wraps, sunglasses, and masks to shield against the sand. Camel rides took center stage: an experience one guest called truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment, camel wobble and all. The moment the animal settled back down to the ground drew as many laughs as the ride itself. 

As the sun began to set over the dunes, the celebration shifted into a full cultural showcase: traditional food prepared right in front of guests, an open invitation to join a drum circle, and henna artists decorating the hands of the women in the group. One guest compared the energy of the drum circle to a tambourine session at a Missionary Baptist church back home — high energy, full-bodied, spirit-led. It was a beautiful blending of cultures, a reminder that joy and rhythm transcend geography. The night wound down with stargazing under some of the clearest skies imaginable, a quiet, reflective close to a day that had been full of movement, sound, and color. As one guest put it, the hospitality extended even into these cultural moments:

For a group that spent days marveling at Dubai’s skyline, its culture, its hospitality, and its sheer scale of luxury, it was this moment — two people committing to each other under an Arabian sunset — that tied the entire trip together.

Guests were candid that Dubai might not be the first place that comes to mind when couples start dreaming up destination wedding locations. But after four days of yacht parties, mosque visits, camel rides, and skyline views, it’s easy to see why that perception is shifting. Dubai offers something rare: the ability to deliver five-star luxury and deep cultural immersion in the same trip, without asking guests to choose between the two. It’s a city built on contrast — ultramodern towers rising a short drive from centuries-old traditions, five-star hospitality paired with genuine cultural exchange. 

For Terrence J and Michaela’s guests, the trip delivered exactly what a wedding celebration should: a chance to witness love in its fullest form, set against a backdrop unlike anywhere else on earth. As one guest put it best, summing up not just the wedding but the entire experience: “I keep saying one of one, but literally.”
