Hillary Clinton: Trump must be held ‘accountable’ for ‘unhinged’ social media posts

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blasted Donald Trump’s “disgraceful” social media posts during an interview on Monday’s “Morning Joe.” She said the president must be held “accountable” for his behavior.

“Words, especially from an American president, have real consequences,” Clinton told MS NOW by phone. “And when you look at the last week of unhinged rants coming from Trump’s social media account, it’s just disgraceful.”

Clinton cited a barrage of recent posts from the president, including his threat to wipe out Iran’s civilization and his continued attacks against Pope Leo XIV.

On Sunday evening, Trump lashed out against the pontiff in a series of posts on Truth Social, calling him “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” He also shared an artificial intelligence-generated image of himself in the likeness of Jesus Christ. (As of Monday morning, that post had been deleted from the president’s account.)

The former Democratic presidential candidate said she believes most Americans read the president’s posts and feel the same way she does. “Both shaking my head and really just feeling sick at heart that we have a president who is such a disgrace,” Clinton said.

“This country of ours is a result of the development over centuries of Western civilization,” she said. “It is about how we hold leaders accountable so they don’t become autocrats and dictators, and how they don’t lead us into reckless wars and really unhinged attacks on the first American pope.”

Clinton told MS NOW that the president’s comments should not ignored or dismissed merely as words. “We need to hold leaders accountable for what they say as well as what they do,” she said.

“Accountability is a very broad concept,” Clinton continued. “It’s not just about holding people accountable for the crimes that they’ve committed, maybe the bribes that they’ve taken, the kind of unaccountable power they’ve exercised. It’s also about holding them to a standard — and the standard should be American democracy, our institutions, the rule of law, how we conduct ourselves.”
