MS NOW’s Rev. Al Sharpton tore into Donald Trump over his “obsession” with former President Barack Obama, after the current president shared a meme of side-by-side photos of himself and his (first) predecessor on social media on Saturday. The images showed Trump at age 20 in his New York Military Academy uniform and a photo of an 18-year-old Obama taken during his time at Occidental College.
The post came just days after the Democrat told “All the Smoke” podcast co-host and former NBA player Matt Barnes that he occupied a “suite” in Trump’s head.
In Sharpton’s analysis, Obama brings out “insecurity” in Trump. “My thoughts are that President Trump cannot get over the fact that he had to succeed a man that clearly had more ability, background, a sense of presidential behavior and could handle pressure in a calm way,” he told MS NOW’s Alex Witt.
“[Obama] was better educated, better background in terms of coming from nothing and achieving something,” Sharpton continued. “And he’s Black.”
“If it’s a glee club contest and one choir wins over another, he’ll mention Obama,” the “Politics Nation” host said of Trump on Sunday. “I mean, there’s some obsession there.”
However, Sharpton said, that preoccupation does not go both ways. “[Obama] just opened his library and I was there,” he told Witt. “He doesn’t even talk about Trump in private. I’ve been around President Obama for the last several years, on many occasions — even social occasions, sometimes. I’ve never heard him say anything about Trump, but Trump must find a way to attack Obama.”
