Netflix brought the cast and creators of Nemesis to Inglewood earlier this week for a premiere event ahead of the show’s debut, giving audiences an early look at one of the streamer’s biggest new crime dramas of the year. Held at Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, the evening combined a screening with a post-show conversation moderated by radio personality Big Boy in partnership with iHeartMedia.
Created by Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole, Nemesis (which debuted on May 14) follows two men positioned on opposite ends of the law. Y’lan Noel stars as Coltrane Wilder, a skilled criminal whose methods make him nearly impossible to predict, while Matthew Law portrays Isaiah Stiles, the detective determined to stop him. Across the series, the rivalry between the two grows into something larger, pulling in family relationships, personal sacrifices, and increasingly dangerous decisions.

Kemp and Marole developed the project together after discussing the kind of stories they felt were missing from television. Kemp explained the original conversations behind the show’s creation. “[Tani and I] were talking about what was missing for our audience,” she said. “And you know who I mean when I say our audience. We really felt like we wanted an action show that was really fierce and honest, but also one that was a little bit more mature and focused on marriage.”
Marole added that the creative team wanted to contribute something new to both television and Black storytelling. “It was important for the story to be told because you always want to add to the culture, creatively,” he said. “Culturally there wasn’t a show like this and genre wise there wasn’t a show like this at the moment. We felt that we could build on the backs of things that came before us while also adding something new and injecting some fun, some entertainment and some layers.”

Large ensemble dramas often succeed or fail based on chemistry between the cast, and Nemesis arrives with one of Netflix’s deepest rosters in recent memory. Alongside Noel and Law, the series features Cleopatra Coleman, Gabrielle Dennis, Michael Potts, Sophina Brown, Quincy Isaiah, Jay Reeves, Jeff Pierre, Cedric Joe, Stephanie Sigman, Moe Irvin, Dawnn Lewis, William Allen Young, and several others. The guest list featured notable figures like Jazmine Robinson, Robin Thede, DJ Hed, Gina Views, and Bresha Webb.
Coleman, who plays Ebony Wilder, described her character as emotionally complex from the moment audiences meet her. Speaking with ESSENCE on the carpet, the actress explained what first attracted her to the role. “First of all, I wanted to work with Courtney,” she said. “Courtney Kemp is amazing. Ebony is a really complicated character. She’s like the Bonnie to Coltrane’s Clyde. She has nerves of steel, but when we meet her, she’s actually been through a loss, so she’s not feeling quite like herself.” The Dopesick star also noted how demanding the role became once filming began. “She can be manipulative, seductive, fearful, vulnerable, all in the same scene,” she said.

Directors Mario Van Peebles, Millicent Shelton, Rob Hardy, and Ruben Garcia each helmed different episodes throughout the season, helping give the series a cinematic feel across multiple storylines. During the discussion, Kemp reflected on collaborating again with Van Peebles, whose influence on Black filmmaking stretches back decades. “It’s great to work with Mario because there’s a bit of the reverence you have for the director of New Jack City, but it’s also great to see my friend Mario discovering these new characters,” Kemp said.
Audience reactions following the screening suggested Netflix may have another large-scale ensemble drama on its hands. Social media posts from attendees highlighted the show’s pacing, action sequences, and performances. Several cast members also shared photos from the carpet, and snapshots from the panel discussion with Big Boy.
Dennis also spoke during the event, offering advice for young Black women hoping to break into entertainment. For Dennis, maintaining belief in yourself remains essential in an industry known for rejection and unpredictability.
“When you believe in yourself, it’s a powerful energy,” Dennis said. “You also have to pour into yourself as a person because you have to have something else going on outside of just this industry.” Before wrapping her conversation, she reflected on what the legacy publication has represented throughout her life and career.
“ESSENCE is home,” she said. “ESSENCE is warm. ESSENCE is the coffee table at mom’s and grandma’s house. It is really the blueprint of fashion and politics and all of the things that are important to the culture. To be able to touch an ESSENCE Magazine, to me, it’s just this quintessential experience of being a Black woman growing up. It was necessary.”
