In early July, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro held a press conference to announce a seemingly ridiculous decision. According to the top federal prosecutor in the nation’s capital, former Olympian David Hearn engaged in a “violent effort” at the Reflecting Pool and “willfully destroyed” public property with his bare hands.

The former Fox News host and shameless Trump loyalist boasted to reporters that her office intended to prove Hearn was guilty of destruction of property, a felony that could have resulted in a 10-year prison sentence.

Late Friday afternoon, unwilling to move forward with a doomed criminal case, Pirro’s office threw in the towel, abandoning the prosecution and acknowledging that the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by a flawed installation rather than vandalism.

For Donald Trump, the developments were devastating for the most obvious reasons: He spent weeks insisting that nefarious scoundrels were secretly responsible for ruining his triumph, only to see his own U.S. attorney admit in a court filing that the president’s version of reality was not true. It’s precisely why the president scrambled over the weekend to throw Pirro under the bus.

And while that’s generally the sort of thing that might cause a prosecutor to resign, it’s also worth pausing to appreciate just how brutal Pirro’s losing streak has become.

She is, after all, the same federal prosecutor who had to drop the widely ridiculed criminal investigation into then-Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. This coincided with a similarly humiliating effort to indict Democratic veterans in Congress who advised service members to follow the law, which also coincided with a separate failed criminal investigation into Joe Biden.

In fact, Pirro’s office has lost so many closely watched cases, with such regularity, that it’s been challenging to keep up.

After the president fired Pam Bondi in April, it sparked speculation as to whom Trump might choose as the next attorney general, which included a round of chatter as to whether Pirro might be among the contenders.

Four months later, the president decided to publicly humiliate Pirro, who continues to lose cases amid reports of “crisis” conditions in the office she ostensibly leads.

If Trump publishes an item to his social media platform sometime soon announcing plans to nominate Pirro to serve as ambassador to some faraway land, no one should be surprised.
