House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats must win the midterm elections to hold the Trump administration “accountable” and accused Republicans of ignoring the financial struggles of Americans.

“I mean, this is the most corrupt administration in American history. Donald Trump makes Richard Nixon look like a choir boy. It ain’t even close,” Jeffries, a New York Democrat, told former Sen. Claire McCaskill on MS NOW’s “Political Potluck” this week.

Jeffries has promised that his party will act as a check on the administration if Democrats win the House in November. In the event of a Democratic majority, Jeffries is expected to face a tough road to speakership, with several incoming progressive members having criticized him publicly.

In his interview with McCaskill, a political analyst for MS NOW, Jeffries connected the issue of affordability with his messaging about Democrats holding Trump accountable.

“If you have people in high office, like the president and others, who are so focused on enriching themselves, their family members, their friends and their donors, then they don’t have the time, inclination, or wherewithal to actually focus on making life more affordable for the American people,” he said. “So this corruption has consequences. And what we’ve made clear is that beginning on day one, we’re gonna hold the crooks accountable.”

Jeffries said Democrats are prepared for the GOP to “deploy voter suppression as a vehicle to stave off being wiped out in November because of their failures and because of the democratic vision of actually addressing the affordability crisis as opposed to viewing it as a hoax.”
