The MAGA-backed Enhanced Games, a steroids-infused Olympics knockoff backed by Donald Trump Jr.’s investment firm, was marketed as if it symbolized the next frontier in “superhuman” athletic competition.
The Enhanced Games were literally promoted with flashy videos as a challenge that would change sports “forever.” And it was a dud, proving to be little more than a glorified freak show in which a bunch of roided-up athletes lost events to people who at least appeared to be competing cleanly.
In his thorough dispatch on the Enhanced Games for the MIT Technology Review, Amit Katwala aptly described it as a “libertarian thought experiment come to life.” And the competition appears to have been an even greater failure than previously known, according to a recent announcement about financial losses.
Whether organizers are willing to admit it or not, the inaugural Enhanced Games looks like just about everything else in Las Vegas: a massive money pit.
The Enhanced Group, the organizers behind the highly controversial games, announced last week that it had lost $61.9 million last quarter after hosting its inaugural eponymous event in Las Vegas during Memorial Day weekend.
In other words, the event was a failure both conceptually and financially. Very on-brand for a Trump family-backed product.
