The man who sprayed Rep. Ilhan Omar with vinegar during a town hall in Minneapolis in January was sentenced Thursday to 14 months in federal prison.

Anthony Kazmierczak was sitting in the audience of a room where Omar was speaking before he charged at her.

Omar, initially startled, stepped toward Kazmierczak with her fist raised and shouted as security personnel knocked him to the ground. Despite aides surrounding her encouraging her to end the event, Omar returned to the podium to continue her remarks.

Omar said the liquid, which turned out to be apple cider vinegar and water, stained her clothes and possibly came in contact with her face and eye. She was ultimately uninjured.

“This was a disturbing assault on Rep. Omar, who is frequently the target of vilifying language by fellow elected officials and members of the public,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said at the time.

Moriarty said her prosecutors filed charges separate from her federal counterparts, underscoring that a state conviction is not subject to a presidential pardon.

Kazmierczak told a close associate years ago that “somebody should kill that bitch,” referring to Omar, an FBI agent said in an affidavit.

Kazmierczak pleaded guilty in May to one count of assaulting a United States officer, telling the judge that his recollection of the day was “fuzzy.”

The encounter took place amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, “Operation Metro Surge,” which saw a massive influx of federal agents despite objections from state and local officials, including Omar.
