Former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein handed President Donald Trump a major victory on Tuesday, defeating incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District Republican primary.
Gallrein, a fifth-generation farmer, had entered the race with a major advantage: Trump’s endorsement. The president had aggressively campaigned against Massie, criticizing him as disloyal and urging voters to support a challenger.
Trump has called Massie a “LOSER” and an “obstructionist and a fool.”
After conceding defeat Tuesday night, Massie thanked his supporters and said his campaign started “out as an election, and it turned into a movement.”
“What happened tonight was God’s will, and we have to figure out what was the purpose of having the biggest fight ever,” he added.
The congressman decried the amount of outside money — some of it tied to the American Israel Political Action Committee — that poured into the contest against him.
“I would have come out sooner, but it took a while to find Ed Gallrein in Tel Aviv,” Massie told his supporters.

Gallrein’s victory signals the president’s continued influence within the GOP. It also caps a contentious and closely watched race that exposed deep divisions within the Republican Party, pitting Massie’s libertarian-leaning independence against a more Trump-aligned vision of conservatism.
Gallrein leaned heavily on his military background while also capitalizing on Trump’s endorsement to consolidate support among loyal GOP voters.
With the district considered safely Republican, Gallrein is now favored to win the general election, marking a dramatic shift in representation for Northern Kentucky after more than a decade of Massie’s tenure.
The primary was expected to test not only Massie’s staying power but also the evolving identity of the Republican electorate in Kentucky — a state that has become a cornerstone of GOP strength in recent election cycles.
Trump has been a vocal critic of Massie, accusing the congressman of being disloyal to the GOP agenda and out of step with the MAGA movement. Massie drew Trump’s ire after opposing several large government-spending packages backed by the president, including the One Big Beautiful Bill Act; criticizing federal pandemic relief measures during Trump’s first term; and at times challenging the administration on surveillance powers and foreign policy issues.
“We got to get rid of this loser. This guy is bad. He’s disloyal to the Republican Party,” Trump said at a rally in Hebron, Kentucky, in March. “He’s disloyal to the people of Kentucky, and most importantly, he is disloyal to the United States of America. And he’s got to be voted out of office as soon as possible.”
Gallrein campaigned as a staunch conservative closely aligned with Trump and the broader MAGA movement. He emphasized border security, military strength and tougher immigration enforcement while calling for reduced federal regulation and expanded domestic energy production.
Despite the president endorsing Gallrein, polling throughout the race consistently showed Massie maintaining a narrow but steady lead. Polls in April placed him ahead by single digits, reflecting both his entrenched support and Gallrein’s lower name recognition among voters.
Kentucky’s 4th District, which includes fast-growing Northern Kentucky communities, is considered safely Republican, meaning the primary winner is widely expected to prevail in the general election.
