Monday’s Campaign Round-Up, 4.6.26: Voters to choose Marjorie Taylor Greene’s successor

Today’s installment of campaign-related news items from across the country.

* Tuesday, April 7, will be a relatively busy day for campaign watchers, starting with a congressional special election in Georgia, where local voters will choose former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s successor. The race is pitting Democrat Shawn Harris, a cattle farmer and retired Army brigadier general, against Republican Clayton Fuller, a former local prosecutor and Air National Guard veteran.

* On a related note, it’s worth flagging that while Fuller is considered the heavy favorite in the Georgia race (the contest is being held in Georgia’s reddest district), Republicans are concerned enough about the outcome that the party and outside groups aligned with the GOP have invested more than $1.5 million into the race.

* Also on Tuesday, voters in Wisconsin will choose a new state Supreme Court justice. Though the contest is technically nonpartisan, Democrats are backing Judge Chris Taylor, while Republicans are supporting Judge Maria Lazar.

* Donald Trump began the week with an endorsement in California’s gubernatorial race: The president announced his support for former Fox News host Steve Hilton.

* Relatedly, Trump’s support for Hilton is a major setback for Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who likely hoped his recent seizure of election ballots would curry favor with the White House.

* In Virginia, the redistricting ballot measure that would help Democrats won’t be decided for another two weeks, but the latest Washington Post-Schar School poll showed a very competitive race: 52% of likely voters said they support overhauling the map, while 47% said they’re against it.

* The same statewide poll found Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger with a 47% approval rating, while 46% disapproved. The governor won her election last fall by 15 points.
