Today’s edition of quick hits.
* The latest from San Diego: “At least three people are dead following a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday, a mosque leader told MS NOW. The deceased include a security guard and two staff members of the Islamic school on the center’s grounds, said Imam Taha Hassane, director of the mosque targeted in the shooting. Police said the threat has been ‘neutralized’ after responding to a reported active shooter situation on Monday.”
* The latest delay: “President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has postponed a planned U.S. military strike on Iran at the request of key Gulf allies who said negotiations with Tehran could produce a deal that ‘will be very acceptable’ to the U.S. and other Middle Eastern countries.”
* Unexpected charges: “Minnesota authorities said Monday they have charged an ICE agent with assault and filing a false report in the shooting of a Venezuelan immigrant at the height of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement surge.”
* WHO declares an Ebola outbreak: “The World Health Organization declared on Saturday that the spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda was a global health emergency. The announcement was made a day after Africa’s leading public health authority reported that an outbreak in a province in the northeast of the country was linked to dozens of suspected deaths. By Saturday, cases had also been confirmed in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, the W.H.O. said.”
* Ukraine hits back: “Three people were killed overnight Saturday and at least a dozen were injured in a wide-scale drone strike on Moscow and the surrounding region, Russian authorities said. It was the largest and deadliest attack on the Russian capital region since President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and it showed Kyiv’s increasing ability to carry out long-range strikes and penetrate air defenses.”
* It’s almost as if the DOGE operation has something to hide: “It’s been nearly a year since Elon Musk left the federal government, and while there have been a few recent revelations, there is still plenty about how the U.S. DOGE Service operated and what its members did in government that remains shrouded in mystery. For months, the Government Accountability Office has been conducting a major investigation into how DOGE members handled sensitive information, but as new internal government emails reveal, final findings could leave plenty of key information out of public view.”
* Yet another shake-up at the FDA: “A Food and Drug Administration official involved in scrutinizing the safety of antidepressants, COVID-19 vaccines and other widely used therapies has been removed from her role leading the agency’s drug program.”
* Another case worth keeping an eye on: “Federal prosecutors will try to make the case this week that three activists who protested immigration enforcement last summer crossed the line from political dissent into criminal conspiracy — a legal theory that prompted the top federal prosecutor in Eastern Washington to resign rather than sign off on the charges.”
See you tomorrow.
