Did you know there’s a version of Montgomery that the history books gave us? Anyone who’s actually spent time in Montgomery knows there’s another story running alongside it.

On May 16, 2026, Montgomery will host the inaugural A Fine & Dandy Affair™ at Blount Cultural Park. It’s a full-day cultural experience that builds to a black-tie gala in the evening, designed to celebrate Southern >Jennifer D. Dobbs, Montgomery’s Director of Cultural Affairs, who dreamed up an event that could hold two things at once. Mayor Steven Reed has been clear about what this moment means for the city.

“Montgomery’s story has always been shaped by deep cultural history, civic leadership, and the strength of our community,” Reed said in the press release. “This partnership with ESSENCE allows us to showcase that legacy in a bold new way. We’re thrilled to host an event that reflects who we are, celebrates our creativity, and welcomes everyone to be part of Montgomery’s next cultural chapter while contributing to the momentum of the Road to ESSENCE Festival.”

The day itself opens with workshops, a 5k run, local and regional vendors, and family programming that makes room for all ages. The vendor marketplace alone will feature more than 50 local businesses, which means this isn’t just a cultural moment—it’s an economic one. College students, young professionals, entrepreneurs, and cultural influencers from across the region, including the Atlanta metro area, are all part of the community this event was built for.

What makes all of this worth watching closely is the ambition underneath it. The people behind A Fine & Dandy Affair™ aren’t thinking about one Saturday in May—they’re thinking about what Montgomery becomes when the world starts paying attention to a city that doesn’t just preserve history but actively creates culture. The goal is to shift Montgomery’s identity from historical landmark to cultural powerhouse, with recurring economic impact, global visibility, and, yes, eventual international sister-city alliances.

Year one is the foundation. The tradition starts here. Montgomery has always had the culture. The question isn’t whether this event will be a good time—it will be. The question is whether you’ll be there when Montgomery steps into its moment.
