Americans continue to express deep frustration over the economy, and MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace said most of them believe there’s only one person responsible for skyrocketing costs: Donald Trump.
“Less than two years into Trump 2.0, and the vast majority of all Americans are completely fed up with the rising costs spurred by what may be Donald Trump’s greatest political betrayal of all time: starting a war in the Mideast with no clear or easy way to get out,” Wallace said on Thursday’s “Deadline: White House.”
The MS NOW host shared a new poll from Politico that found 56% of Americans view the high cost of living as the most important issue facing the country today, followed by 29% who say the poor state of the economy is the top issue.
And, according to Wallace, a deeper look at the results shows that the American people are “laying the blame directly at Trump’s feet.” She said the reality of Americans’ financial struggles has become an “inconvenient truth” that continues to drive Trump’s poll numbers “down ever lower and lower and lower.”
When Politico asked voters about the specific failures of Trump’s presidency, 36% told pollsters the administration had not done enough to combat the rising cost of living, 21% directly called out the president’s tariffs, and 27% expressed dissatisfaction with the economy generally.
Wallace said, however, that it was another question that exposed just how frustrated the American people are with the president.
“If Trump is looking for good news in any of this, he might want to change the channel right about now,” she advised. “When asked about the successes of Trump’s presidency, the No. 1 answer — the No. 1 response, at 36% — was ‘none.’”
