Brian Poindexter, the Democrat hoping to unseat Rep. Max Miller in the midterm election, is sticking to his argument that he is a better advocate for Ohioans in the 7th Congressional District, regardless of the Republican’s scandal-plagued personal life.

In an interview with MS NOW’s “The Weeknight” on Monday, Poindexter said Miller is “unfit for office — not just in his personal life, but the actions that he’s taken in Congress.”

Poindexter, an ironworker and a city council member whose campaign has attracted support from national Democrats in recent weeks, has studiously avoided centering the domestic abuse allegations against Miller in his campaign. His platform, he told “The Weeknight,” is about “fighting for workers, bringing our district together — Republicans, independents and Democrats — around a common theme that working people just aren’t making it these days.”

“Obviously, we have a lot of attention on our race because of the allegations against my opponent, but we’re steadfast and strong in our message of what we’re fighting for, and we’re not going to let the narrative be changed by my opponent’s misdeeds,” he said.

Miller is engaged in an ugly custody battle with his ex-wife Emily Moreno — the daughter of Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno — who has accused him of abusing her and hurting their 2-year-old daughter. He has denied the allegations and claimed that his ex-wife is mentally unstable, which she denies. The House Ethics Committee is investigating the allegations.

With Miller battling the allegations, Democrats believe Poindexter can win over working-class voters who heavily supported President Donald Trump in the 2024 election and help edge out the GOP’s narrow majority in Congress.

Miller has faced a growing chorus of calls within the GOP to end his re-election campaign. But he has declined to drop out, blowing past Ohio Republicans’ Monday 4 p.m. deadline to find a replacement candidate.

When asked about the allegations against his opponent, Poindexter said it was an example of a “two-tiered justice system.”

“You have the wealthy and well-connected [who] can be alleged to have committed these atrocities, and life goes on as usual,” he said. “We see it not only in this case, but we also see it in the Epstein files. And these types of things continuously put a microscope under us as [a] society and what we’re willing to accept from our leaders.”
