President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to a new low in polling conducted by NBC News, with support from his staunchest backers waning.

A new survey released Sunday by the NBC News Decision Desk marks the first time in the unit’s polling that fewer than 50% of Republicans say they “strongly” approve of the president’s job performance.

The survey, conducted from August. 20 to Sept. 1, shows 41% of Republicans and 62% of respondents who identify as MAGA, say they strongly approve of Trump’s leadership — a significant drop from last spring.

The same survey conducted from March 30 to April 13 showed that 52% of Republicans and 71% of MAGA supporters said they strongly approved of Trump’s handling of the presidency.

Still, 80% of Republicans and 93% of MAGA supporters say they approve of Trump’s job performance — if not strongly.

Trump’s overall approval rating with Americans sits at 36%, which is 1 percentage point lower than the Decision Desk poll conducted in the spring.

The latest poll released on Sunday comes amid widespread angst over rising costs — including gas and diesel prices — amid Trump’s unpopular war against Iran, which is now in its seventh month. The national average cost of gas per gallon is $4.15, according to motorist group AAA, an increase of almost one dollar from last year and more than double than Trump’s $2-per-gallon campaign pledge.
