Rubio’s State Department outlaws ‘objectionable’ works fighting racism

Out with books that condemn racism and teach how to fight it, and in with works by writers who have been celebrated by white supremacists.

Back in April, Marco Rubio’s State Department announced a “basic training program” for new Foreign Service employees, thousands of whom are tasked with enacting the country’s diplomatic agenda abroad. As I wrote at the time, the onboarding program includes “required and recommended readings” of works by authors such as the late diplomat George Kennan and the late political scientist Samuel Huntington, whose bigoted views have provided fodder for white supremacists.

And now the State Department is effectively banning books and training exercises that push back against bigotry. Last week, the department put out a press release titled “Ending DEI Ideology in the Foreign Service.” Putting aside for a moment that “DEI ideology” isn’t a real thing, the department listed what it calls “objectionable” content that will no longer be used, such as Ta-Nehisi Coates’ award-winning essay “The Case for Reparations.”

The initiative is clearly an attack on anti-racist writings and training materials, which the press release baselessly claims “shamefully denigrated the United States, derided Americans of certain backgrounds, and distracted from legitimate foreign policy objectives that serve the American people.”

It’s despicable yet predictable from an administration known for echoing white supremacist propaganda.

The targeted content includes materials on how to combat systemic racism around the globe, trainings on dealing with unconscious bias and a vocabulary list to help Foreign Service workers avoid using problematic terminology for people from other countries, such as “illegal alien.”

Oh, the horror!

The MAGA movement wants you to believe that it’s liberals who comport themselves like dainty flowers too delicate to face the harsh realities of the world, while simultaneously aligning itself with the most authoritarian, censorship-happy regime in modern history.

And in this case, the State Department clearly doesn’t want anti-racism getting in the way as it indoctrinates new employees.
